We had the good fortune of connecting with YIEN XU and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi YIEN, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Creating art is where my talent lies. Everyone uses the means they are good at to explore the world, and for me, the pursuit of art allows me to understand the world and grasp how it works. Art allows me to explore uncharted territories and experiment and corroborate within the world. Each discipline is a facet of the world and they are interconnected, and deeper study of art will help you think about other things. To me, success in art means success in life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was born and raised in a small town in China. Both then and now, there was no good environment to foster the growth of artists. It is like a miracle that I have been able to achieve what I have achieved now. I’m most proud of How I made my way in the art world through my own efforts despite the challenges and many detours. Without an environment or a supportive mentor, I had to figure it out independently, which takes time and costs resources. This method takes someone ten years to achieve what would have taken others five years to achieve. I had no choice in the original conditions, forcing me to work several times harder than others to make up for the lack of initial conditions. This allowed me to keep learning to understand the whole picture of art that allowed me to know what it was I should do and how to do it well. I understood where I stand in the tree of art and where I want to be. Hard work and study are essential to success. There are no shortcuts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I came to Los Angeles recently, and because of the pandemic, I haven’t had much time to explore the city. But even so, I’m already enamored with California. If my friend came to visit, I would definitely take them to the beach first, as the stunning coastline of Los Angeles never disappoints. Then I would take them to eat the food here. Food here has such a wide variety that it’s possible to eat almost every cuisine in the world within Los Angeles. Next, I would take them to the art museums, because LA has its rich reputation not just for the climate, but also for the artistic vibe created by the great art museums that immerses its guests, leaving a great impression. I would them hiking at the many mountains that surround the city. As Los Angeles is the home base of Hollywood, it goes without saying that I would take them to visit Disney and Universal Studios, where dreams are made.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
That must be my wife. My wife and I are both artists, which is not an easy feat for a family. An artistic career means a lot of dedication. In the early years of my career, my wife sacrificed a lot of her own time and energy to take care of the family. She even put her own artistic career on hold until mine was on track. I devoted almost all my time to studying and shooting during those years. I owe her, and she must have been hurt. I am grateful for her tolerance and support of me. I have to shout out that I love her from the depths of my heart. I also want to thank my 3-year-old son for being such a good boy, as it’s not easy for a child to be raised in a family of artists. He doesn’t cause a lot of trouble and has adapted to his parents’ messy routine. We love you.
