Meet Yihuang Zhou | Designer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yihuang Zhou and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yihuang, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As a designer and artist, I believe that taking risks is an essential part of the creative process. Whether it’s experimenting with new techniques or taking on challenging projects, I’ve found that taking calculated risks can lead to breakthroughs and new opportunities.
For me, taking risks has played an important role in my career. I’ve taken on projects that were outside my comfort zone, and while they were challenging, they also allowed me to grow and expand my skill set.
At the same time, I recognize that taking risks can be daunting, and it’s important to balance the potential rewards with the potential consequences. That is to say, always make informed decisions and take risks responsibly.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a designer, I specialize in creating visual solutions that communicate specific messages to target audiences. What sets me apart from others is my ability to combine creativity, technical skills, and strategic thinking to develop designs that not only look great but also meet the unique needs of my clients.
I’m most proud of my ability to create designs that effectively convey the intended message while also being visually appealing and engaging. I’m also excited about the ever-evolving nature of the field and the opportunities it presents for continued learning and growth.
Getting to where I am today professionally has been a challenging but rewarding journey. It hasn’t always been easy, and there have been many obstacles and setbacks along the way. However, I’ve learned to overcome these challenges by staying focused, adaptable, and open to new ideas and approaches. I’ve also sought out opportunities to learn from others and collaborate with like-minded individuals, which has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of effective communication and collaboration. Design is rarely a solo endeavor, and being able to work effectively with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders is essential to success. I’ve also learned that taking risks and being willing to try new things can lead to unexpected opportunities and breakthroughs.
Ultimately, what I want the world to know about me and my practice is that I’m passionate about creating designs that not only look great but also make a meaningful impact. I strive to create designs that are not just aesthetically pleasing but also help my clients achieve their goals.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If they are here for the first time, I would take them to some of my personal favorite landmarks and attractions like the the Griffith Observatory and the Santa Monica Pier. For food and drinks, we might check out some of the city’s famous restaurants like In-N-Out Burger, Pink’s Hot Dogs, or Philippe the Original for a French dip sandwich.
I would also make sure to take my friend on a hike in one of the city’s beautiful parks, or maybe drive out to the Joshua Tree National Park. We also can’t miss the city’s amazing museums like the Getty Center, the Broad, or the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big shoutout to the film Dead Poets Society for its message of carpe diem and the transformative power of education. Through its portrayal of John Keating and his impact on his students, the film reminds me of the importance of embracing creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. Its message of taking risks and pursuing our passions never fails to inspire me. If I hadn’t seen this film, I am probably doing something other than design right now.
