Meet Yu-Hsin (Angel) Lin | Music Composer & Pianist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yu-Hsin (Angel) Lin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yu-Hsin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have been deeply involved in the music scene for over 20 years, starting from my childhood with classical music training in Taiwan. That early experience sparked my passion for creating music. Along the way, I have held various roles, including Music Producer at a game corporation and Music Education Director at music institutions in Taiwan, as well as apprenticing in audio post production studios in Los Angeles. Now, with a music degree under my belt, I am on the cusp of launching my own audio post production studio as the CEO of NJo SoundLAb LLC. For me, it’s not just about personal success—it’s about sharing my love for music with the world. I am ready to kickstart my journey in sound post-production.
Collaborating with filmmakers is where I feel most at home. I find joy in using my music to bring stories to life. Recognizing a need for high-quality, custom music, I plan to fill that gap with my studio, enhancing the emotional impact of films and media projects. Embarking on this entrepreneurial journey is a humbling experience for me. I see it as an opportunity to continue pursuing my passion for music while also contributing something meaningful to the music industry. My Goal for the studio is to create a supportive space for creativity and innovation, building lasting relationships and leaving a positive impact on the film music community.
Moreover, I spent time as an apprentice at Private Island sound post-production studio in Los Angeles. There, I learned valuable skills from Hollywood and Dolby Corporation sound mixer Michael J. McDonald and many experienced sound engineers, honing my craft in dialogue editing, recording, sound designing and mixing. Now, I have applied the knowledge to my own music works and collaborated with even more filmmakers on sound post-production. It’s an exciting journey ahead!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a music composer bouncing between Los Angeles and Taipei, soaking in all the vibes and scenes from both cities. What makes my music stand out? Well, I’ve got this knack for mixing Eastern and Western sounds in a way that just clicks with people all over the world. My journey into music started back in classical music school as a teenager, where I learned the ins and outs of theory and composition. But it was in Academy of Art University where things really took off. That’s where I stumbled upon music tech and opened the door to a whole new world of creativity. Mixing old-school training with new-school tricks? It’s been a game-changer.
One thing I’m super proud of is my ability to tell stories through music. Whether it’s for a movie, game, or some other project, I’m all about creating these immersive soundscapes that really pull you in. Now, getting to where I am today hasn’t been a walk in the park. I’ve faced my fair share of challenges, but each one has only fueled my passion even more. Through sheer determination and hard work, I’ve grown as an artist, learning the importance of teamwork and staying true to my vision.
Music, man, it’s got this incredible power to bring people together, no matter where they’re from. And that’s what I’m all about – creating tunes that touch people’s hearts and leave a lasting impression. So yeah, that’s me in a nutshell. I’m on a mission to keep telling stories through music, and I’m so grateful for the chance to share my journey with you all. Here’s to making more magic together! Thanks for having my back.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I graduated from the West Coast and now working here in Los Angeles, my love for the East Coast runs deep. When I first hit up spots like Boston and New York, I was hooked on their vibe. The weather, the energy—totally unique and totally awesome.
You know what blew my mind the most? The transit system in New York. It’s like, super convenient and easy to navigate, making exploring the city a breeze. I was all about soaking in the Big Apple’s culture and vibe. And oh boy, don’t even get me started on the seafood! Rhode Island and Boston got some killer oysters and lobsters. From those fresh Wellfleet oysters to the juicy Maine lobsters, every bite was a flavor explosion that had me drooling for more.
Oh, and let me tell you about my weakness: coffee. I can’t resist it! New York is just filled with these adorable little coffee spots, perfect for kicking back and getting those creative juices flowing. Honestly, I’ve fallen even more in love with the city because of it. Overall, my time on the East Coast has been epic, shaping both my personal and professional life. The energy, the diversity—it’s all been a huge inspiration for my music and creativity. Can’t wait to share all these dope experiences with my friends!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! First off, I’d love to give a big shoutout to the Taitung Hunter School in Taiwan. Being part of this incredible organization has been such a transformative experience for me. Not only did I learn invaluable wilderness skills and ecological conservation practices, but I also delved deep into the rich culture of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. Immersing myself in their songs, chants, and traditions ignited a profound love for traditional Taiwanese music within me.
Additionally, the school instilled in me a sense of empowerment, especially as a woman, highlighting the resilience and strength we all possess. It’s been a true honor to be part of a community that celebrates nature, tradition, and personal growth. And let’s not forget the amazing opportunity I had in 2018, representing Taiwan’s indigenous peoples at the Riddu Riddu Music Festival in Norway. Engaging with indigenous representatives from around the world and experiencing their unique music was incredibly inspiring. It fueled my desire to create music that celebrates the diverse cultures of indigenous peoples everywhere.
