Meet Yundi Wendy Zhang | Brand Experience Creative & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yundi Wendy Zhang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yundi Wendy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My career journey started in architecture and computational design, leading me through pit stops in fashion and emerging technologies, finally arriving in creative direction for brand experiences. Now, as the industry shifts to embrace hybrid skill sets and experience, diversifying my professional trajectory has been very luckily favoured as ‘multidisciplinary,’ thanks to inspiration from the likes of Lin-Manuel Miranda. The assortment of roles has resulted in equally rewarding experiences – from designing a Nespresso pop-up café inside the elevator of the World Trade Center earlier this year, to exhibiting my artwork Fashion NN: Future Couture at K11 gallery this summer.
For both passion and purpose, it is exciting to have multiple threads running, but being consistent is the way to bring it all together. In the relatively small industry, having a reputation as ‘a reliable pair of hands’ lays firm groundwork. And from there, I can start expanding the creative boundaries.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Behind the scenes of the creative process, I am always on the lookout for opportunities to combine my spatial sensibilities and knowledge of emerging technology with the creation of brand experiences. Transitioning from design to creative direction requires not only experience, but also a shift of mindset. At the core of it all remained my passion for making human-centered, narrative-driven experiences.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Last summer, my coworkers and I spent two hours in LA traffic on a party bus dancing with a drag queen, the commute sent us from a morning beach walk with bubbly at Venice to an evening gallery hop at Chinatown. The cherry on top? A karaoke bar hidden behind a kitchen backdoor at K-town. Always ready for another trip like that with my visiting friends 😉
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was incredibly lucky to have cool parents 🙂 I grew up in a supportive family environment. As a kid I was always picking up new hobbies – movies, anime, painting, gaming, puzzles and so many. The encouragement from my parents enabled me to turn these interests into passions. And with a dad who ran a building materials business, I often heard him share stories about how he used different resources to create interior designs when we visited different parts of the city. This instilled in me a mindset for exploring creative solutions early on.
