We had the good fortune of connecting with Yunqian Lin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yunqian, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from China, where I was born and raised, deeply immersed in the rich culture and history of Asia. My parents played a significant role in shaping my perspective, always encouraging me with the mantra, “One small step a day, always new heights.” They emphasized the importance of valuing the learning process over simply expecting results. This upbringing instilled in me a love for the journey itself, whether it leads to success or failure, as each experience brings valuable lessons and growth.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In my captivating “Entropy” series, I harness the power of photography to compile a visual archive extracted from the natural world. I employ the medium of photography to amass evidence gleaned from nature. As a co-creator, the dynamic world around me helps interweave the strands of chance together, turning unpredictability into artistic expressions. Water engenders an intricate metamorphosis, eluding easy tracing, perpetually deconstructing and reconstructing itself. This mirrors my creative approach wherein the original photo is dismantled, culminating in a fresh work through reconstruction. Time, crucial in comprehending water’s movement, also shapes my creative process. The irreversible passage of time leaves its indelible mark on my images, evolving from the moment of in-camera capture to the infusion of transformative natural elements. These serve as a direct record, an imprint of the natural features encapsulated on film. The resulting image encapsulates water’s innate force in a visual tableau.
To me, photography goes beyond mere documentation of reality in motion; it transforms into a pathway for delving into the very core of existence itself. It acts as a tool for contemplating the fundamental nature of reality, inviting exploration and introspection. My unwavering belief in the distinctive synergy between photographic materials, light, and substance fuels an innovative approach to authentically capture fleeting moments.
My journey to where I am today professionally has been filled with challenges and learning experiences. It hasn’t been easy, but each obstacle has shaped my artistic vision and resilience. One of the significant challenges was finding my unique voice in a competitive field. To overcome this, I embraced the unpredictability of nature as a co-creator, allowing the natural elements to influence my work and create something truly original. The lessons I’ve learned along the way include the importance of persistence, staying true to my vision, and continuously seeking inspiration from the world around me.
I want the world to know that my art is a celebration of nature’s relentless power and beauty. It captures the cycles of destruction and renewal, reflecting the ever-changing and dynamic essence of the natural world. My brand and story are rooted in a deep respect for nature and a commitment to exploring and documenting its profound impact on our lives. Through my work, I aim to inspire others to appreciate and connect with the natural world, recognizing its influence on our existence and creativity.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would love to bring my friend back to Savannah, GA, the city where I first came to America to study, and show them the best time ever. Our week-long trip would include visits to the various faculties of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to explore its unique shops, galleries, and vibrant artistic community. We’d also take a trip to Tybee Island for stargazing and a breathtaking sunrise, providing a peaceful and inspiring experience by the ocean. A day trip to Wormsloe Historic Site and the charming Isle of Hope would allow us to walk through picturesque avenues of live oaks, explore the colonial estate, and appreciate the beauty of the coastal landscape.
We would also spend a day visiting Savannah’s stunning gardens and delving into its haunted history with a ghost tour, adding an element of mystery and adventure to our trip. Additionally, a visit to the University of Wormsloe would provide further insight into the area’s rich history and academic significance. Throughout the week, we would enjoy the local cuisine at iconic restaurants, from casual spots like The Crab Shack to upscale dining at places like The Grey and Husk Savannah. This itinerary blends the best of Savannah’s cultural, historical, and natural attractions, ensuring an unforgettable experience for my friend.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to my graduate school teacher, Rebecca Nolan. Her unwavering encouragement and support throughout my graduate studies played a pivotal role in building my confidence. She went above and beyond to provide guidance, offer constructive feedback, and inspire me to reach my full potential. Rebecca’s mentorship has had a lasting impact on my personal and professional development, and I am deeply grateful for her dedication and belief in my abilities. Her influence continues to inspire me as I navigate my career and strive to achieve my goals. Additionally, I would like to acknowledge my parents, whose wisdom and values have shaped my approach to life and learning, and my friends and colleagues who have provided support and motivation along the way.
