We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuvraj Singh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yuvraj, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Well there is never going to be an obvious answer to this question. For me, when I first started to learn music production, I never received any form of validation apart from my parents, of course, nor did I look for one. I was always trying to learn, study and perfect my craft until I became confident in myself and my skills. Only after 6 or 7 years of producing music and constant learning was I finally able to get the validation from people, not just the listeners but even professionals who have worked in the music industry. So, don’t crave validation from other people, crave it from yourself.
I would say that the only reason to keep going would be if you really believe in yourself and are passionate about your work. It takes at least 10,000 hours to master any skill, so don’t give up if you haven’t achieved something you always wanted to. Not being able to achieve your goal should be the very reason to keep going until you finally have. Besides, it is the journey that matters not the destination.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a music producer, sound designer and audio engineer. I got into music because I love the feelings I get whenever I listen to music and I wish to create the same.
I got into music before entering middle school. It was my brother’s birthday and so we decided to gift him a small toy keyboard. He played with it for a while and lost interest in it pretty soon. Therefore, I decided to give it a try and learnt my first song, “Happy Birthday”. My parents saw the interest for music slowly rising in me and hired a music teacher. I started learning music theory and playing classical pieces on my own. As I got into middle school, I discovered new genres, songs that everyone was listening to. I got exposed to modern music like pop, dance, trap, edm. Whenever I listened to songs, they would inspire me to do something. I could feel the rush in my body and wondered about the process behind making a song. That’s when I gave my first try in making music on a laptop using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). I experimented with midi sequencing and just fiddled with my first music software ever, FL Studio, until I finally switched to Mac and started using GarageBand and Logic Pro. As my studies progressed and I graduated to high-school, I moved to the UK for my studies and kept music as my hobby. Outside school, I would produce music in my room, on my laptop and release it on SoundCloud. I kept improving year after year and then I finally decided to join the music college, Berklee College of Music. It opened an entirely new set of opportunities for me, where music was so diverse and knowledge was immense. Music became a language and started coming naturally to me. I was able to hear songs from a completely different perspective. I gained so many skills from the fields I didn’t even know existed.
Over the years, I gained experience in producing, sound designing, mixing and mastering electronic music. By years of experimentation and studying, I became confident in producing any genre of electronic music from dance, house, dubstep, colour bass, future bass to electronic pop, rnb, and many other genres. Through years of critical listening, I have gained the ability to study and adapt to any genre and produce it, making me a versatile music producer. As I continue to learn each day, I have gained different sets of skills from coding in MAX/ MSP, to implementing immersive interactive audio for video games in Unity and more. I even have experience working with API and Neve consoles as a recording engineer, and mixing on Avid control surfaces. As part of my projects, I also have experience mixing in 5.1 for films and TV series.
CurioCity is my artist name, and a musical project I started in middle school, as a way to evaluate my musical journey and look over my progress from where I started to where I am right now. It has been a great journey and am really proud of the skills I have gained through years and dedication of constant learning. As a Berklee student, I now feel even more confident in my musicality and understanding of music as a language, which has lifted my listening and production skills to another level. With CurioCity, I plan to take it even further and improve as I learn more about my abilities everyday.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were to take my best friend to a fun place, it would probably be MGM Music Hall in Boston, as this is where many of the big concerts take place from famous artists like Charlie Puth, Finneas, etc. Another fun place would be Fenway Park which is a stadium in Boston for many sports events. For food and drinks, there are many great bars and restaurants with a lot of variety, from Indian, Italian, Thai to Japanese and much more, all in walking distance. Boston is a fun city for students, and so there are a lot of things to do with easy commute.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a lot of people who have supported me in my work and helped me with my journey. However, there is one friend I worked with, who has particularly inspired me. His name is Guillermo. He is a latin music producer, and his way of communicating and collaborating with the artists has helped me learn from him and grow as a collaborative producer.
