We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvonne Boyiazis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yvonne, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
“Fake it ‘till you make it.” I think if you believe you have “made it,” it is a great personal failure, as it allows you to slow into a complacency where you think your best is behind you. Not to say you cannot celebrate victories, but I believe people never stop learning unless they personally stifle their ability to learn. In such a way, I hope to never “make it.” I want to position myself in a posture of learning and of growth where I am always receptive to new ideas and techniques. Conversely, I don’t think it’s conducive to artistic growth to be in a constant state of “faking it” either. I do deal with imposter syndrome, but I have to be intentional about aligning myself between confidence and insecurity in such a way where I can courageously make mistakes and give myself the grace to learn from them throughout the creative process.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I pursued makeup because it brings me joy. Not always happiness necessarily, but always joy. It can be exhausting and difficult and stressful, as any job can be, but seeing all of the pieces come together at the end has never failed to remind me why I do it, and it erases any negative emotion on the way to a makeup’s final application. Seeing something you made and put your creative life force into combined with the life of the actor wearing the makeup is incredibly fulfilling, it’s the creation something that takes on a life of its own, I imagine it’s how a parent feels seeing a child thrive. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Depending on the time of year, I would absolutely drag them to either a Halloween haunt event in the fall or renaissance fair in the spring. There’s a lot of great thrifting in Santa Monica, and a number of beachside art walks on the weekends in Santa Barbara.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents encouraged my decision to not attend a traditional college, and I am thankful for them, as I doubted what it would portend for my future with so many outside voices telling me I needed a “fallback plan.” I’m grateful they believed in me.
