Meet Ze Feng

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ze Feng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ze, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From an early age, my talent in drawing was recognized by my kindergarten teacher, which led to over a decade of experience in drawing before I embarked on a career in graphic design. With a comprehensive education in both art and design schools, I came to realize the intertwined nature of these disciplines and how they had become an integral part of my life.

Pursuing an artistic and creative career brings me immense joy and fulfillment. I am driven to convey my ideas and meaningful messages through my work, relishing the creative process and the clash of rational and emotional inspirations. Seeing people engage with my work, their comments, reflections, and even criticisms, is incredibly rewarding.

I believe that loving what you do and making a living from it is one of the greatest joys in life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work centers on dynamic brand systems, editorial design, and immersive experiences, with a strong emphasis on creating unique visual communication across both physical and digital mediums. Currently, I am exploring my personal methodology that bridges the gap between cross-media expression. In my project “Deified,” I aim to connect traditional graphic design, creative coding, and interactive experiences, creating a powerful synergy that goes beyond individual disciplines.

In today’s rapidly evolving age, traditional disciplines are undergoing significant transformations, while ongoing technological innovations continuously reshape our world. I believe narrow definitions should not confine design; instead, it should evolve into a profound source of insight. My MFA thesis, “InfoScape: Towards New Realities,” employs creative coding and other cutting-edge technologies to discuss contemporary issues such as information overload and the evolution of tools, culminating in a reimagined online reading experience.

The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but it has been fulfilling. Life is unpredictable and full of challenges, but I am fortunate to have found my passion early on. Entering this industry didn’t come with significant struggles, and I quickly discovered my love for it along the way.

One of the biggest challenges I face is balancing my personal feelings about the industry. Graphic design holds a special place in my life—not as something I worship, but as both my profession and a deeply cherished hobby.

Looking forward, my primary concern is the future and whether the belief I believe in will maintain its vitality. This introspection leads me to constantly evaluate the significance and purpose of every project I undertake.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles, I’d make sure they have an amazing week. We’d start in Pasadena, checking out the Norton Simon Museum and wandering through Old Town. Then, we’d head to Venice Beach for a day, exploring the boardwalk and biking over to Santa Monica Pier. In Hollywood, we’d walk the Walk of Fame, visit the Griffith Observatory, and maybe catch a show at the Hollywood Bowl. Downtown LA would be on our list too, with stops at the Broad Museum and the Arts District. A scenic drive to Malibu for some beach time and a visit to the Getty Villa would be perfect. We’d finish off in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, shopping on Rodeo Drive, dining at Catch LA, and enjoying the nightlife. It would be a fantastic mix of culture, scenery, and iconic LA spots.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Brad Bartlett, an incredibly important mentor during my student years. As a young graphic designer and student, having the opportunity to learn from and work alongside someone I have always admired was extraordinary. Brad is a remarkable educator whose constant encouragement and guidance helped me grow into a better designer. His authenticity, professionalism, generosity, patience, and emotional intelligence not only showed me what a good designer is like but also what a good designer can become.
