We had the good fortune of connecting with Ziyang Xu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ziyang, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because I believe in architecture’s unique power to shape how people experience and connect with their surroundings. From my earliest studies, I was fascinated by architecture’s ability to define spaces that not only serve functional needs but also inspire, create atmospheres, and address real-world issues through artistic expression. To me, architecture is more than a structure; it’s a material embodiment of cultural and social values, carrying a lasting impact on collective memory and shaping both individual and communal identities. I’m deeply committed to architecture’s potential to solve practical challenges in ways that uplift and foster a sense of place. This balance between aesthetic expression and purposeful design is where I find the greatest meaning in my work, allowing me to contribute to society by creating spaces that resonate with both utility and a profound sense of purpose.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional career in architecture has been driven by a commitment to creating spaces that are both sustainable and culturally resonant. Working across Asia, Europe, and the U.S. has given me a unique perspective on the role of architecture in bridging past and present. Specializing in renovations and extensions, I’m focused on extending a building’s lifecycle and enhancing its connection to the community. This journey hasn’t been easy; adapting to diverse design cultures taught me the importance of flexibility and balance—knowing when to push creative boundaries and when to honor constraints. Ultimately, I want my work to show that architecture can be both functional and deeply meaningful, shaping not only spaces but also the identity of a place.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The essence of Los Angeles lies in its vibrant atmosphere and its embrace of diversity and cultural fusion. I would make sure my friend experiences the sunrise at Griffith Observatory, the sunset at Venice Beach, the blend of history and modern culture in Downtown, and the colorful allure of Hollywood. The Arts District, too, is a cultural hub that truly reflects the spirit of LA.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d dedicate my shoutout to my family, who’ve been incredibly supportive and shaped how I approach design. From a young age, they encouraged me to look at things from different angles and find unconventional solutions to everyday problems. This mindset has been a huge influence on my architectural work, pushing me to question assumptions and appreciate the multifaceted nature of design challenges. Their support really laid the foundation for how I think and create today.
