We had the good fortune of connecting with zo frampton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi zo, how do you define success?
Success isn’t a destination for me, it’s making sure that I am evolving with each new stage of my life and career. It is loving the process and finding inspiration in the everyday.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a LA based artist working out of my home studio in Topanga Canyon. I got a MFA from California College of the Arts in 2002, and I’ve been happily pursuing my artistic dreams ever since.
My work consists of intricate drawings composed of layers upon layers of meticulously detailed shapes. This process is incredibly time intensive, and obsessive. The resulting compositions are an accumulation, that convey depth and dimension akin to natural phenomena—think microorganisms, schools of fish, or the rhythmic patterns of storms.
Navigating the art world is undeniably challenging. From securing exhibition spaces to maintaining an online presence, the demands are myriad. Yet, living in Topanga Canyon is very lucky. Each year, I participate in the vibrant artist studio tour, @openstudiosoftopanga, alongside a supportive community of local artists. I also get to spend my days doing my favorite thing, making art in my studio nestled in the trees.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We get a lot of visitors, so this comes up a lot! We are outdoorsy people so there is always beach time, my favorite is El Matador State Beach. I love a good hike and Topanga State Park is perfect for that. Eagle Rock is a wonderful hike with lunch at The Living Cafe on Topanga Canyon Boulevard after that. Los Angeles if full of superb museums and galleries. The Broad is a favorite and Hauser & Wirth downtown. I am an avid reader so if you are already downtown for the art you might as well stop by The Last Bookstore on Spring Street and pick up a great new book.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I grew up surrounded by strong women who led by example when it came to creativity. I learned invaluable skills like sewing, knitting, and mastering power tools from them. Their unwavering support continues to fuel my creative journey. My mom is still the first person I go to for a critique on any new piece.
