Meet Zorine Truly | Actress, Creator, and Small Business owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Zorine Truly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zorine, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking has been the foundation to everything I do! I moved to California from Memphis six years ago with 40 dollars and a dream. I came here thinking I would be following one particular dream and it turned into me jumping into many different avenues, and I am so thankful for the journey. For instance I never thought I would be a business owner, but here I am two years later a multi-hyphenate and living out my dreams, So I would say every risk that I’ve taken has paid off.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Have you heard of the poem by Tupac “A rose from Concentre” Well I would say I am a prime example of that, with every experience or passion I have been able to use it to create and grow. I think that my authenticity is what sets me apart from others. I come from a city where most people don’t make it past 25 without violence touching their lives and sometimes that type of experience can stall dreams(that’s the concentre) but I’ve used it to motivate me. Growing up a black, queer, & a plus sized girl in the south a lot of times I felt boxed in! I would look around my neighborhood and feel stuck but because of my family’s unconditional support I was able to overcome my environment and be a product of positivity, So yes I would say that I faced lots of challenges but I used those as stepping stones towards the path I know the universe has for me. I want the world to know that Zorine Truly has arrived! I am here and I’m bringing all the nuances of being black with me. I embrace all parts of me even when it’s not popular!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was to show someone around LA it would basically be a black restaurant tour with a sprinkle of beach vibes and musuems ! We would have to get fried fish at Mel’s Fish Shack, Candied Yams & Hennessy drinks at Fixins, Black Eye Pea Fritters at Alta, People watching & crab cakes at The District, Beach Day at Hermosa Beach, The Broad Museum, and Hoochie Con at Junior High LA ( curated and hosted by yours truly) Rum Punch at A Beautiful Life Cafe, Vintage Shopping at the Black Market Flea and Yoga in the park with WalkGoodLA. One thing I love about LA is the diverse energies at Black Owned Events and Restaurants.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that have contributed to my efforts but most importantly my mama who always supported me even if she didn’t understand exactly what I was chasing and despite a rocky history with LA supported my move 100%, However I would be remiss if i did not mention my constant inspiration DARIUS EVER TRULY. My brother who came out to LA to pursue his passions and was unfortunately killed here in LA Oct 27TH 2007. He has and continues to motivate, protect, and guide me throughout my journey, without his example of fearlessness I would not be here so whenever I experience any success I share it with him and I give all recognition to my ancestors who protect and guide me.
