We had the good fortune of connecting with Zuer Men and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zuer, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up in Guangzhou, a southern city in China, a city of opportunity. My parents migrated from the northwest of China in search of better prospects. They were once reckless, full of energy and hope. Two young individuals, taking a gamble, left behind good jobs in their hometown to strive for success in Guangzhou. Their determination and hard-working spirit have passed on to me.

My childhood was filled with imagination. With my parents often busy with work, I spent more time with my imagination than others. It was during this time that I discovered my great interest in world-building. I would imagine entire worlds and watch characters I created walk through them. I would start writing, drawing, and constantly consuming books, comics, movies, and animations when alone. I absorbed knowledge and honed my skills. Even though I didn’t have the opportunity to study at an art school in my early years, my passion and effort drove me to eventually become an illustrator and concept designer, the identity I had dreamed of.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In each of my artworks, even in the smallest piece, there lies a unique story. When I create art, my mind ponders how the elements within the composition develop and how the characters grow. They are never standalone, flat pieces; they exist within the vast web of my imagination, interconnected. I always find ways to incorporate details into my artwork to construct a complete narrative. These details may be subtle or abstract, but they are there, waiting to be discovered and interconnected.

Additionally, I inevitably incorporate traditional Chinese color palettes and elements into my work due to China’s rich history. Therefore, I have developed a habit of seeking references and background stories during the creative process. All of this enriches my creative process, making my paintings more vibrant and imbued with meanings beyond visual appreciation.

This habit is also reflected in my character designs. I firmly believe that to some extent, people are judged by their appearance. The marks on their faces, expressions, hairstyles, body postures, and the items they carry all tell the stories of their lives. I always rationalize their costume and contemplate why they possess certain items, revealing their hidden adventures. I simply cannot help myself! I perceive every world and character I depict as real beings existing in their realms. This is my strength, my narrative drive, my approach to creation, and my love for the worlds I create.

I am an illustrator and a concept designer. When it comes to these two professions, people often have different impressions. Illustrators may have their distinct styles, while concept designers are often seen as gears in a larger machine, catering to mainstream aesthetics. However, I don’t see these roles as conflicting; it’s merely a matter of balance. The industry always needs fresh blood, new perspectives, and unseen ideas. As a Chinese artist, I have a natural advantage, so I don’t intend to suppress my strengths to conform to market styles. This is a dilemma faced by many around me, some struggling, others have doubts. But I always believe that every work I do embodies a part of me, which serves as the anchor linking all works together. To quote one of my favorite singers,  AURORA, “I never had the world, so why change for it?” Be free and be yourself.

All you need to know, whether as an illustrator or a concept artist, Zuer Men is a world-builder.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Although I’m currently in Baltimore, I still want to talk about my city, Guangzhou. It has changed tremendously in the past twenty years! It has grown into a bustling metropolis, a paradise for shopping and dining. If you know dim sum in the United States, you should know that most of it is influenced by Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The tradition of morning tea is also deeply rooted in Guangzhou. The city is divided into old and new districts. We start by shopping in the new district, walking through the city, passing by the central axis of Guangzhou, visiting the WorldMall, and strolling along the Pearl River. Experiencing the hustle and bustle, and cleanliness of a big city. We can visit the Guangzhou Museum of Art and walk along the riverbanks of Ersha Island. Then, we can head to the core shopping district for some retail therapy, and across from it, there are many elegant cafes where we can take a break. The old district is filled with hills and parks, perfect for strolls. We can wander through the alleys to find the best rice noodle rolls. If you’re interested in fashion, Dongshan Kou has many independent designer clothing stores and small galleries, which are also great spots for photography. Guangzhou is a city full of possibilities; no matter what you’re into, you can find your favorite corner in Guangzhou. But my favorite will always be the little area under my home, where I grew up, and where you can find the best coconut chicken!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A little gratitude practice I see. First and foremost, I must express my gratitude to my art mentor, Mr. Yanming Lin. He is not only an artist but also an educator. I am equally thankful to my parents who recognized my passion and supported my dreams, enabling me to study under Mr. Lin’s guidance. Mr. Lin’s approach to education is never about drawing it right but rather drawing the way you see it. He imparts the inclusivity and possibilities of art, always introducing new mediums and encouraging experimentation to his students. Twenty years have passed, and he still remains steadfast on the path of art education, unwavering in his dedication. He is now one of the best in his line of work. As his student, I am proud and have inherited the same perseverance, determination, and love for art.

I must also thank my parents who have always supported my artistic pursuits. They share the same admiration and appreciation for art, although they didn’t have the opportunity to practice it themselves. Despite the challenges that come with pursuing art, they have always stood by me. And to my loyal friends who accompanied me through childhood, exploring my imagination together. I can’t recall how many countless days and nights we spent together talking and drawing the worlds we created.
