We had the good fortune of connecting with Zuzanna Gerulewicz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zuzanna, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balance, what is it? Haha there’s no balance in my artistic life. But I like it this way!
Ever since I remember it’s been pretty chaotic: from traveling a lot, photographing different projects to sitting and editing in front of my computer. I move around a lot for work and when I have an opening of free time, I try to use it for personal traveling so I feel like I’m always on the go, no matter if it’s for work or pleasure. This is something that works for me and that brings me joy.
I think the key to “balance” is maintain a lifestyle that you simply love and that doesn’t drain you.
It means something else to everyone. For me, balance is a combination or work and personal life that lets me support my preferred lifestyle, feel creative without falling into a slave mode. We work to live, not live to work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It took me a long time to come to where I am now as an artist and as a person. Style changes overtime, evolves because you evolve, your tastes and point of view as you grow. There were a lot of challenges along the way (there still are), but what made me jump on the right track and be who I am today was defining my purpose, my dream clients and the style that I like and want to pursue.
I’ve spent a great deal of time contemplating on this and it shifted completely the way I think about photography, what I see and how I see it. It made me more mindful about certain aspects like: customer service, quality over quantity or education. It is a game changer once you figure that out and I’m excited to see where it takes me now and how it will affect my art and career.
As for my art – there’re 2 different sides of it: portrait and commercial photography & wedding photography.
In portrait and commercial photography work I’ve always enjoyed mixing fashion, props, textures, fabrics to get bold and cinematic images.
If it goes for wedding photography, I’ve always been a huge believer in timelessness and elegance that will last forever. Documented with an editorial approach, a modern romantic feel, and a hint of vintage-makes it a dream concoction in my opinion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh I would tell my friend a week is not enough. There’re too many things to do and see!
We’d definitely have to check off all the LA staples: Santa Monica and Venice, LACMA, Beverly Hills and Griffith Observatory among the firsts. A day spent on Melrose while vintage shopping would also go on the list.
Another attraction would be to adventure along the coast to enjoy a some beach time and watch the famous California sunset.
As far as the food and drinks go – I would definitely take my friend to a Mexican cantina to experience the meaning of a pitcher of margarita and other days we would indulge ourselves with lots and lots of Thai food (my fav!).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge thanks and a shoutout has to right away go to my closest family and friends for a constant support, encouragement and love over the years, through tick and thin times. There’s no way, I would be able to keep on going without that little kick of power that I get from them. It’s truly priceless to have such people in your life.
