We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Perkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, what do you attribute your success to?
I’m a comedian at heart, it’s what I love to do and has always been my dream, and producing comedy projects and my own shows is what makes me live that dream out. I also host my own late night talk show called “Another Late Show Tonight! with Mike Perkins” which was another dream of mine that I built from the ground up. I think what I attribute most of my success to is just believing in yourself and wanting to keep pushing forward and becoming the best version of yourself. I know that probably sounds very “yoga” or “zen” and you should stretch after you say that regardless, but it’s true in everything that you do. As comedians, if you don’t keep pushing forward and wanting to learn everything you can about the craft and utilize those tools, it’s going to be an even longer road to where you want to end up. For me, and building my brand of “Another Late Show Tonight!” it’s pushing me to write new material every show, to build strong relationships with my team and guests, and also collaborate in coming up with new content that can benefit all of us as a team to put ourselves out there. That’s what it’s all about too is surrounding yourself with the right people that you love and can trust, and climbing together.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
You’re awesome, thank you for taking this time to get to know me! If I was going to open up I think it’s all about my drive and passion and that’s what sets me apart from just someone saying “Hey, maybe I can do that” but it’s also my positive outlook and love of what I do and the people I do it with that makes me unique and lucky to be where I’m at today. I’m proud of everything that I accomplish and I celebrate those milestones every single time. I know many people give the advice of “eyes on your own paper” and it’s really true, this type of career will never happen overnight and don’t worry about how fast someone else gets there or whatever else happens, be focused on yourself and amazing things will happen! Also, on that note of seeing other people succeed, support each other and build each other up! Was it easy? Man, if this was suppose to be easy then I definitely took the hard path on this course. That’s not saying I’m having a hard time, it’s just you have to keep reaching those certain milestones and moving forward. I started producing my own improv and stand-up comedy shows because I wanted to give myself the opportunities to get better and learn and then that idea grows into something you never think of and you roll with those punches. After a couple years of producing shows around town and starting to feature myself, I had this idea for my own talk show and finally decided to make it happen which started up “Another Late Show Tonight! with Mike Perkins”. So a little over a year ago I started doing test runs for a couple months at another theater and getting my feet wet in that type of show. We have stand-up comedy of course and then interviews, but we also have musical guests, games, comedy sketches, characters, we film spoof commercials and intro videos…. it’s a big production every show and takes a lot of work! In the beginning it was only both me and my best friend Paul Brodo producing and putting this show together, he was also an executive producer, announcer, writer, and so much more. Now being at our home at Loft Ensemble Theatre in NoHo, we upgraded and took this show to a whole new level! One of my best friends Adam Chambers, artistic director at Loft Ensemble and one half of the musical group The SHOW with Adam & Sean, gave me the amazing opportunity of bringing the show exclusively to Loft. Since October 2019, having the show there it’s been incredible working with a full team of people from technical directors and sound engineers, to even having Adam and Sean Durrie as our official House Band! This show has evolved so much and keeps on getting better every single time, and the audiences have been so nice and always leave saying that was the best show they’ve been to in a long time and can’t wait to come back!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I mean 100% you have to come see my show at Loft Ensemble every month, I’ll love you forever for that! I always love going to different food places, Little Toni’s in NoHo right across the street from Loft is always amazing, get the pepperoni and sausage. I’m an east coast guy and man, their pizza and food is as close as you get to feeling like home! If it’s their birthday we’re hitting up that Sprinkles Cupcake ATM, thank you Jessica Alba! I’m really into live music too, so going to places like Hotel Cafe or Black Rabbit Rose would be on the itinerary for sure, and hey if we have a lot of free time let’s just go to Vegas baby!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by so many close friends and family that constantly inspire and encourage me and I love every single one of them. Everything that I do is because they keep giving me the motivation to do what I do best by entertaining and to also just have fun and love what you’re doing. If you don’t love what you’re doing, what’s the point of it all! The entertainment industry is so hard on you and already tough as it is that if you don’t love it, save yourself the time and stress.
