We had the good fortune of connecting with Monroe Cline and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monroe, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
You should give up on something if it becomes clear that it doesn’t bring you joy anymore, you aren’t loving the process, or you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Always keep going if what you are doing excites you and gives you a sense of purpose in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I fell in love with telling a story (and being the center of attention- ha!) at a young age, and it has organically turned into a career for me (thank goodness!) in the art forms of dance and acting. It wasn’t easy for me to branch out of my conservative bubble in Texas and declare that I wanted to move to LA to be a professional dancer (how I started) but I knew I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn’t go after what I couldn’t live without: performing. Telling a story. Making people feel emotions that they don’t always access in everyday life. There’s always obstacles: rejection, finances, or judgment from your peers and family. What has personally kept me going is visualizing my end goal. That makes those speed bumps easier in the grand scheme of things. I want people to realize the message that has guided me so strongly throughout my journey so far: your only limit is yourself. Take that mindset with you, and you’ll be unstoppable.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Although I’ve only lived in LA for a little over 2 years, I’ve definitely covered some ground. For fun activities, I’d take my best friend shopping at the Melrose Trading post, maybe the Grove, and at Malibu Country Mart. To soak up some sun, the private Pointe Dume beach would be my pick. We would definitely have to stop for coffee at Alfred’s (their matcha is the best!) and grab a bite at the picturesque Malibu Farm. If we are downtown, we could check out The Last Bookstore with its awesome layout, and walk through the Grand Central Market with all of its yummy food trucks. Hikes are a must: Lake Hollywood and the neighboring Wisdom Tree hike are both gems that I frequent. Also the Griffith Observatory because you get a workout and some sightseeing all in one! For dinner I would drag us to Catch- definitely one of my all time favorite restaurants. To top it all off, a leisurely cruise up Mulholland Drive where you can see the entire city when it’s most beautiful all lit up at night!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents-I know, so cliché! But in all honesty, they have been the most solid support system for me and constantly remind me to be the best version of myself. Love you mom and dad!
