We had the good fortune of connecting with Nisié Palacio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nisié, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Bad Gyal Certified would not be successful without the team of people that support & believe in me. That is the driving force that propels me forward everyday. Not only do they keep me grounded, but they give me the confidence to take risks I need to make to succeed. Your team not only has your back emotionally, but will also be your mouthpiece when you’re not in the room. I have been fortunate enough to work on projects with big names because of the referrals that were spoken on my behalf. Those moments are blessings. I am a firm believer in “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Then you show up and pass every professional expectation. I honestly wouldn’t have been given these opportunities otherwise. Another important factor behind the success of my brand is remaining relatable. I never want to come across unreachable. I love to connect with my clients and keep an ongoing relationship. Remembering details like birthdays or big life accomplishments turn you from a luxury service to a friend. And when you’re a genuine friend, you’ll always have a loyal client.

What sets me apart from other makeup artists is my perspective on how I see a face. In today’s climate, it’s all about piling on as much product as possible. For me, beauty is being able to see that person as they are. Even if they have on the brightest colors, the placement of shadows and the reasoning behind why I place their highlight/contour is to keep the integrity of their natural beauty. It took me a long time to get to where I am today in my artistry. With YouTube culture and influencers saturating social media feeds, sometimes it’s challenging not to give into trends that get all the attention. However, the lesson that I have learned is that carving out my own lane has worked to my advantage. I have been told many times that when they see my work, they know it’s me before looking at the credits. And that is what I am most proud of. What I want the world to know about my brand is that you don’t have to be afraid to step outside your comfort zone because even while pushing the envelope, you’ll still be comfortable within your own skin.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area we would go to Thousand Steps Beach. I love being by the water and relaxing. The beach is more private atmosphere so you don’t feel closer in by other people. I’m a true foodie so I like to explore new restaurants. Most likely we would Yelp a 5 star spot and have good food, good drinks, then call it a day. However, if there is a good Soca party that night we might have to endure the sleepiness from all the sun and fresh air to dance for the rest of the night.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The people I would like to shoutout are the team I mentioned previously— Tiffany Jewels, Dani, Kellz, Tiesha, Betty Rox, Marawa, Honey, Carson, Whitney, Kash, Antonio, Foreigner, and Chanti. You all individually play a roll in where I am at today. Thank you for pushing me, encouraging me, and giving me a solid foundation.
