Perspectives on work life balance

The Coronavirus has given many us an opportunity to pause and think about life, our purpose, and even the right work life balance. What’s your perspective and has it changed over time?

Work/Life balance has long been a challenge for me. I am the type of person that focuses on one thing and stays focused so I have always had trouble with this. In the early years of my career everything was tattooing, if I wasn’t working I was drawing, or researching tattoo by going to other shops talking to other tattooers, later on I traveled and worked conventions extensively. My personal life was all about work and most of the people I associated with were tattooers. I then got into oil painting so my personal life suffered more, tattooing all day and painting all night,trying to have a social life in between once in a while. Read more>>

Being an artist musician as we’ve gotten older, for our peace of mind and sanity, we have to balance out our need to make a living and family needs. We have to discipline our time with the continued exploration of our instruments, song craft, and the business of music, which includes most of the work. Networking, promotion, distribution are all necessary parts of the puzzle for the modern musician and the little monetary gain you may recieve. For whatever reasons, in society it’s more about the entertainment factor than the music. Music competes with the publics attention span which is short. Read more>>

I was single when I started in the fashion industry and was able to dedicate my full attention my business only. The sacrifices of working long hours, or 7 days a week didn’t seem like a big deal at the time. Once you start a family, then you need to maintain the right balance between work and life. It’s a challenge at times to balance both, because each needs the proper amount of your time and attention in order for them to thrive. Being blessed with 3 daughters and a beautiful wife, allowed me to realize that I need to be more involved with my family so that I don’t lose out on making memories with them that will last a lifetime. I used to only thing about my career and never gave myself enough work life balance. For the past 20+ years I’ve had my own business and in my earlier years all I could focus on was the end game but my end game kept changing. Every 5 years or so I would think of something new to venture into. My professor in design school once said creative people gets bored easily so they are always looking for something new. That is very true in my case. I am always looking for new ways to reinvent myself and evolve but my core will always be in design. Read more>>

I think that balance is the secret for almost everything in life. We have to work, but if we work a lot we can have a burnout. It’s good to workout but if you go beyond your limits, you’ll get injured. Finding the right dose for everything we do is key to be able to do everything that we like and that we need to do to move on. Read more>>
