We had the good fortune of connecting with Raquel dos Reis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raquel, let’s jump right in. What are you most passionate about? Why?
I put a high priority on my job, I’m really passionate about makeup. I attended a makeup school, differents workshops and seminars. I work with so many differents productions from around the world, this always helps me to learn something new and I can improve myself. Is so fascinating to do makeup, people are transformed from inside to out; is gratifying to see their confidence change and the smile in their face. I love to work everyday in so many differents kind of beauty and transform people. I really enjoy mixing some colors or adding some blood on set.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a combination of skills and experience that make me apart from others, I’m able to deliver exceptional results once I’m a beauty and special effects makeup artist. I received three awards as best makeup artist in films festivals. Exactly one week after I finished makeup school I got offered to work in a film, after that I got all the jobs through recommendations and people who I worked previously. It was hard in the beginning, because nobody knew me and my job. But to be honest, until now is not easy, I still have to work hard and give my best. I have to track the makeup trends and keeping learning new tricks. Every new project means new challenges, it’s a new story, new actors, differents production, different looks that I have to do during the day… Although sometimes I don’t get enough sleep; it’s a pleasure be on set, there’s always something to learn about my department, new make, production, life…but specially to respect others, everybody is different and think different, be patient and listen what others have to say, and never take anything personally.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friend to visit the walk fame, is crazy and crowded place, there is possible to find so many differents culture and languages. Later to downtown LA and visit some museum, and we would end the day in Santa Monica Pier to see the sunset on the ferris wheel. Some places that I truly recommend for fast food: Monty’s Good Burger, Umami Burger, Shake Shack and In-N-Out Burger. But if my friend prefer a restaurant I recommend: Bossa Nova Brazilian Cuisine, Flavor of India, Trastevere Restaurant and The Cheesecake Factory. To have some drink any bar in Hollywood is fun, but to party downtown there are the best places. To have more fun during the day, Six Flags are the best place for who is not afraid of anything, because the roller coasters are so fast and exciting, on the other hand if the person wants to go a little bit slower, Disneyland or Universal Studios also are a good choices.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A lot of people gave me support, mentorship, love and encouragement for my success during all my life. I’m so grateful to God to put me in a family that always support all my decisions and encourage me to go always one step further. My friends recognize my job and give me some new ideas. All the head makeup artists that I worked with give me mentorship. The true is everyone who crossed my way gave me some kind of the support, mentorship…the most special thing is that everybody who works with me give me encouragement to keep going and never give up my dreams. Everybody who I worked with has a little credit and recognition in my story, I’m so grateful for all of them.
