We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanelle John and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanelle, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite affirmation is new to me. Saying “I am of value” reminds me that whatever is happening outside of myself does not determine who I am. Being a business owner there are a lot of ups and downs. If you let your self-worth be determined by your highs and lows it will be much harder to push through hard times.

What should our readers know about your business?
Being 5’8 I struggled to find clothing that would look right on my luscious long legs when shopping online so I look for items that are great for tall and short women. I also felt like so many of the online boutiques I saw had the same style and I wanted to find things that were different. I want my customers to feel confident about their purchases at House of Nisut. I really look for things with a unique twist but still wearable to any kind of event or function my girl would attend. I’m still new in the game and there is always something new to learn but I am enjoying the changes I make to make my brand better. I’m a one-woman show so it can be difficult not having someone to lean on who is accountable besides myself however, I’m learning to trust myself. I do these Dr. Joe Dispenza guided meditations and Yoga every day which keep me in a good space. If my energy isn’t right nothing works. It’s so important for me to go within before I go without.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d eat at Azla Ethiopian and head to the Arts District for Art Walk. I’d take them for a walk around Lake Hollywood Reservoir and show them the Hollywood sign. I would show them that being vegan can be fun by taking them to Gracias Madre and then take a bottle of wine and some cups to one of the Mulholland Dr. overlooks. We’d hit up Post & Beam and the California African American Museum. And end it all by adding on to our melanin laying out at El Matador Beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friend Legacy Gamble. She is always a light, is encouraging and has really supported me and my business. She also is a wine ambassador & provides amazing wine tasting experiences in DTLA. As black women in business, we have to stick together.
