We had the good fortune of connecting with Tatiana Turan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tatiana, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think too many people shy away from, even just the word, RISK. But I have found it to be an imperative part of success. You have to think big and do big, in order to get big. That means taking risks, which I have done multiple times in my work life. I do understand the need to feel supported and grounded in your decision to take a risk, but I also understand that without big actions, you play small and stay in a “small pond”. Much of my risk taking has been about the start of something, in my case, businesses. The action of implementing and forming a tiny idea into an actual concrete business, has proven to be beneficial for me, so I am a huge advocate of taking action, and not just thinking it or speaking it. All three of my businesses: Bling Divas Entertainment (dance ent co); To The Core Pilates Studio; and my acting career, have proven to be well worth my risk of starting each one. They would not have happened had I allowed fear to stand in my way. Of course, I was scared before starting them. Of course I had those negative voices in my head. But there is no moving forward if we allow fear and those voices to put us in a state of paralyzation. We have to face that fear head on and GO FOR IT. Dive in. As the old saying goes, “better to regret something you have done, then never to have done at all”. I live by that motto. My husband likes to call me, “the-build-it-and-they-will-come-girl”……I think I have proven that there’s a reason for that saying.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, I wear many (creative) hats, so it’s hard to answer this in one sentence. With my acting, I am most proud of getting back into it. After having been out of the scene for over a decade, it would have been an easy out not to try again. Years prior, I found myself on a different path than I had anticipated. Since I was dancing at the same time I was pursuing my acting, I was booking more dance & choreography jobs at that time, so I decided to form my company, Bling Divas. That became so successful so fast, that it took up much of my time and soon became my main “bread-winning” business. It was at that point, I decided I had to give up acting. But about 5 years ago, I myself stopped dancing. Although I am, to this day running my company as choreographer, producer & director,……I found that my performer’s soul was not being fulfilled. So I made the scary decision to get back into acting, as a middle-aged woman. And I went full force! So much had changed in the industry. I had to relearn some of the “business” parts of the biz, like self-submissions on line are huge now…..as is social media for actors, etc….. I was afraid that I was too old and nothing would come my way at this point. You know, all that negative head-talk. But I am proud that I dove right in and did not get intimidated or allow my fear to stop me from living my dream. Besides, they need “Moms” and “Bosses” on TV right?!! I work hard, as always, and stay focused. That has helped to bring me the bookings that are right for me. I am nowhere near where I envision myself being, but I am happy whenever I am on set, or working my craft in some form or another. With BLING DIVAS – I am very proud of how I built this company up over the years. I started at a time when there were not a lot of quality dance entertainment companies. I saw the need and went for it. It started small at first, with a set of 4 matching showgirl costumes I had custom made, and a show I choreographed to pitch a VEGAS-themed production…….then our Can-can show, then candy girls, then Cabaret, and so on and so on…… We just kept growing. We were booking often and with repeat event planners. I knew I had a good thing. I knew I was providing quality entertainment and productions. To this day, I am proud of my company and how far it’s come. My Pilates Studio started in much of the same way as my other businesses. I woke up one morning, after years of taking Pilates myself, and I had this strong knowing that I needed to get certified. I found a program, put in the hours, and fast-tracked my way to getting my certification. There were no short-cuts. Just focus and determination. When I was ready, I built my own studio and the students followed immediately after. Where you put your focus is where the energy flows!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
any place in DTLA is cool and hopping for a fun night out – dinner and drinks. I also like Huntington Gardens for a pretty afternoon lunch or tea. Hikes at Wisdom Tree or Fryman Canyon are also peaceful and so scenic. Going to the beach is a rare treat, so when I can, I enjoy renting a bike and taking it all the way from Malibu to Venice on the boardwalk. I enjoy being outside as much as possible. Since we live in SoCal, it’s a no brainer. I don’t get out too too much, since my event work with Bling Divas requires me to be on site often on weekend nights. So on my days off, I really enjoy being at home with my husband and our two dogs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mom, Michele Turan, has been my biggest cheerleader. I know it sounds corny, because, of course, my MOM is going to believe in me and think I’m the best at everything! But when so many of my performer friends were dealing with parents who did not support their dreams and their desires to live creative lives, my Mom was cheering me on all the way. She supported my decision to get my BA in Drama from UCIrvine, when she could’ve given me a guilt trip for not utilizing my 4.0 GPA for something ‘more substantial’. She also supported my idea to start my dance entertainment company, years later. She cheered me on when I also wanted to get my Pilates certification to become an instructor. She has always been supportive and encouraging. For this, I am grateful. It allowed me to GO FOR IT, without feeling guilty or shameful. Whether I failed or succeeded, I knew I had someone crucial on my side who would never tell me, “I told you so”. It gave me more confidence to take risks and do everything I love to do, and make a living doing them. My Mom’s support and belief in me, has been so important. I am so very grateful and fortunate for her!
