One of our favorite things to do is to ask the folks we are inspired by what they are inspired by. We’ve shared some of their responses below.

Love. Cheesy, yes I know, and I’m probably going to say love forty more times but it’s true, Love! I love to love! I even have a tattoo of a heart on my arm, so what does that tell you. Now that doesn’t always mean I need love reciprocated, but I believe that one of my purposes and a major reason why I’m here, is to be able to demonstrate love. Everyone has their own interpretation on love, but to me, if I can impact at least one person a day, everyday, then my belief is fulfilled. Whether that’s providing warmth, an ear to vent to, a shoulder to cry on, share a laugh with, or just sit quietly so they have a safe physical presence near, that’s what I stride to be. I can say this wholeheartedly, it wasn’t until this past year when I finally knew what it meant to love myself. Read more>>

When developing an idea for a film, I am inspired by our diverse world, the beauty in nature, and music. I spend a fair amount of time outside, exploring the various beaches, hiking trails, and national parks the United States offers. For example, I recently wrote a film set in Northern Michigan at the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. I have been exploring that area since I was a child, and the beauty of the dunes inspired me to write a coming-of-age story about a girl whose journey climbing the tall, daunting dunes helps her find the acceptance of others and self-acceptance. When it comes to music, live music inspires me the most, and I think my audience can see a hint of my fascination with live music in my work. Read more>>

As an artist, my visual art practice is influenced by many things, including but not limited to geometry, meditation, astronomy, abstraction, and installation art. The ideas about time and location always fascinate me. I often draw from projective geometry, a diagram used in astronomical observation. The five projection perspectives (equatorial, elliptical, azimuthal, galactic, and super-galactic systems) reflect humans’ position in space at a specific moment. I study the diagram on a database and represent each perspective system with a distinct color in my paintings. My work embed the ideas of repetition, multiplicity, matrix making, and layering strategies found in printmaking techniques. Read more>>

Stories. Since I was a child, I have had a deep love for stories, particularly films and books. I remember staying up many nights, reading the newest fantasy novel from my school’s library, transporting myself into an imaginary world. At the time, I think I assumed that my love for stories wasn’t unique and didn’t give it much more thought than that. My”aha!” moment, however, came with watching a film that is now a favorite of mine: Cinema Paradiso. The actual story, a coming of age tale, was so simple, yet so captivating. To me, the score itself, written by the great Ennio Morricone, perfectly captured the entire story without ever using a word. Throughout the film, I remember this unexplainable feeling of awe and this wave of emotions that crashed onto me during the final scene. Read more>>
