I feel like the one thing outsiders are unaware of in the film industry is how difficult it is to be a Latina filmmaker in this white male-dominated career. As a Latina filmmaker, we have to work so much more in order to get some respect and recognition as a filmmaker because more often than not, we are not given the same opportunities and if we do finally get an opportunity, there is no space to mess that up. In my opinion, one of the things that surprises me the most, that I think people are unaware of, is that the process of getting a song from being an idea in my head, or any artist’s head, to being heard on your phone, is so long and complex. There’s so much work involved — from writing, making arrangements, practicing, recording, mixing, mastering, public relations, etc. It’s such a process, and today with the expectations of constant, quality, content creation the actual art of making the music, and the meaning of it, has really been underestimated. That’s why I’m always a huge promoter of listening to any song on the best headphones or speakers I have — people, multiple people, likely spent days up until 3 am getting this out to be heard, so I want to be able to show them gratitude in that way.
