What’s the right work-life balance for you?

Our community is filled with hard-working, high achieving entrepreneurs and creatives and so work-life balance is a complicated, but highly relevant topic. We’ve shared some responses from the community about work life balance and how their views have evolved over time below.

My work life balance is never balanced. I’m either focused more on my life or more on my work haha. I’m still trying to find the balance. but it is difficult. Back in 2020 I felt like I had so much energy so I focused a lot on my content because I was home all day in the pandemic. The work life balance is something I think we’re all trying to achieve and it has always been important to me, especially now that I have children of my own. I think about the balance all the time because I am really career driven and being in real estate, you’re on 24/7, but I also want to raise my children and be there for the important moments that pass by so quickly. When I started my first job (a typical 9-5 workplace) I stayed late almost every evening because that’s just what everyone else around me did. There was definitely an overall feeling of guilt or even laziness for leaving at 5pm since everyone else was still there. We didn’t get overtime and the volume of work always stayed the same despite everyone constantly staying late. Read more>>

I have been working since I was 15, which is pretty standard here in the Unites States. However, I grew up in an immigrant family that highly prioritized and encouraged entrepreneurship and hard work. I am extremely grateful for this aspect of my upbringing, but it definitely has come with its fair share of difficulties in regards to my relationship with work and play. Years ago, when I decided to switch my career path from graphic design to illustration, I had no work-life balance. I worked almost 20hrs every day on my portfolio and drawings to establish my style and voice as an illustrator. I knew hardworking was the only way to lead the life I wanted. As my career path expands and my illustrations get more recognition, luckily, I have more time to rest and restore my creative energy in my daily life. Read more>>

I used to work in restaurants while I was also producing just a ton of work right when I first moved to LA. I found myself always working a little and really struggled keeping my personal life out of my work. Last year the restaurant I worked at closed, and that pushed me to leave the restaurant industry and start working full time in the film industry. Read more>>

I don’t believe there is a perfect balance between work and life. You give attention when and where attention is needed. Starting this business was a very personal experience, one I believed in with my entire being. As cliché as it may sound, my blood, sweat and tears quite literally built this business. Initially, I believed that work-life balance was all about balancing work and personal life equally, like a 50/50 split; but I have come to realize that it’s really more about prioritizing in any given moment and across time. Sometimes work needs more attention, and other times my personal life needs more attention. It’s like a teeter-totter or a scale, where the weight can shift to either side depending on the circumstances. Read more>>
