Work-Life Balance: is there such a thing?

A host of factors, developments, and dynamics have made most industries more competitive than ever. As a result so many of us wonder whether there is still such a thing as work-life balance. We reached out to the community to hear perspectives on finding the right balance.

As the mom of a post-covid toddler my sense of work life balance has changed a LOT over the past 2 and a half years. Especially early in my son’s life, I didn’t have a lot of balance. I was as all in as I could manage in all areas of my life and honestly, it burned me out EXCESSIVELY. It has taken a lot of trial and error to find ways to be fully present in what I’m doing, when I’m doing it. When I’m in mom mode, an identity I adore, I have had to purposefully give myself permission to let my entrepreneur hat go away for a bit. Read more>>

Finding the right balance when you love your job so much, can be quite challenging. You realise that you start making less and less time for friends, family, and yourself – which can become frustrating and lonely at times. You spend so many hours per day with strangers on set that after a few days start becoming a sort of temporary family and friends and some of them you meet again on other sets and you feel at home in a way. In the beginning I was working all the time but quickly realised that it is not my natural pace. I still work all the time now, but the difference is I take breaks when I need to and want to, I don’t stick to a 9-5, 5 days a week routine. A long term sustainable pace is what matters to me. I want to be creating art when I am 90 and still enjoy it. It is about the journey and the process for me, the money will come when your output happens during ‘flow state’ so I take my mental and physical health very seriously. Read more>>

I used to be a workaholic. My work defined me. I felt my self-worth through my job title, my salary, my office, my expensive things. My days were spent racing against my calendar, barely eating, and getting home just in time for bed. Work felt external. It depleted me. My work was my life…..and now, my life is my work. I wake up naturally without an alarm, meditate, exercise, maybe go for a hike, take a bath, take my time drinking coffee, and then go into the studio. I do most things in my life to nurture myself and my loved ones. I am happy. And when I am happy and taken care of, I make my best work. Read more>>

I think because I grew up under such environment, like this goes as far back to my mom actively taking me to symphonies, broadway, or art shows since she was still pregnant with me, that it would be more of a question why I wouldn’t pursue an artistic or creative career. I think it is a privilege being able to work in the creative industry, as most of us go into it due to the passion we had for it in the beginning, and we simply get to make a living whilst doing what we love! I believe even if I didn’t start my own design studio, Read more>>

When I first started my career I never said no to staying late or coming in early for a client. I did anything to make sure I was going to have a successful busy business. I always was afraid if I took any time off I would loose my clients. I now am in a place where I actually take days off and have realized I have to take time away from work to be a better business owner and be the best I can be for my clients and also for my family. It’s so important to have a good balance. Read more>>

My work-life balance has definitely changed over the years. At the core, I am working 24/7, but it doesn’t feel like work because I am doing what I love. Staying busy and always having something on my calendar keeps me working toward my goals on a consistent basis. Nowadays, being able to work from our phones truly allows the “work anywhere” lifestyle to become easy. I think balance is finding what excites you to get up every day – and it can change on a yearly, weekly, or daily basis. Read more>>

I probably still spend way too much time working, haha. It’s pretty rare for even one day to go by where I don’t draw anything. But I do try to give myself some time off here and there. That’s definitely something I’ve gotten better at over the years. When I was younger I was always trying to push myself, but nowadays I find you get more done in the long run if you let yourself rest every now and then. Read more>>
