We had the good fortune of connecting with nina hirten and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi nina, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The short answer is because I have to! Creating is in my blood, and I get very depressed if I don’t feel like I can get that creative outlet. Pursuing a career in the arts is the only guaranteed way for me to be able to make the art and sustain myself and my family.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My personal art and music is generally cheeky with a dark twist. As DEROSNEC I’ve created music videos for myself and others, dark-pop styled electronic music, shows, a vlog, and various types of illustration and comic books. As a professional editor, I tend to be drawn to animation, music videos, as well as indie live action projects – but I’ve had the pleasure of working on some pretty major stuff as well, such as Marvel movies, Godzilla projects, Curious George, and of course the two TV shows that I’m currently working on: Duncanville and The Prince. Was it easy? Definitely not. I grew up in a fairly privileged area and it was a hard pill to swallow that I wasn’t doing anything more special than anyone else once I got into the real world. At my lowest I was broke and couch surfing – but I never did give up, and did what I had to do to survive, make new connections, learn new things, and make my art. Today I feel like I’ve hit a level of success that I didn’t think I could hit, and yet I can see that I can go even further. My biggest takeaway, what I would’ve told my younger self, is that you literally can do anything if you want it bad enough. But you have to believe in yourself, mean what you say, and do everything that you say you’re going to do. Personal accountability is your strongest skill to develop.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is so vast and great, I even wrote a song about it!! I could easily fill a week of fun things to do. I usually take visitors to Japantown for mochi balls and fancy donuts, as well as Cliftons for the coolest atmosphere ever created. There’s also of course Laurel and Coldwater Canyons which has amazing trails and beautiful scenery. Dockweiler beach not only gets your ocean fix but provides some fun airplane watching. Then for my other Goth-minded friends a dance party at Bar Sinister always hits the spot!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who have contributed to my career path going in the direction is has – as a film editor, the people who took the risk of giving me a chance are probably the biggest contributors. Director Roger Larry hired me as one of his interns and ended up giving me the chance to edit and score my first feature doc which really set the stage and foundation for what was to come, Producer Tini Wider not only got me the job that inevitably led me to where I am today but has always been a grounded voice in my head reminding me to keep being the squeaky wheel, and Editor John Caldwell provided me the opportunity to edit on the types of projects that I’ve always dreamed about working on. Musically and artistically, my family (who are all also artists and musicians) are my biggest supporters. My grandmother in particular was always encouraging me to make more art, act, sing, and of course practice practice practice!
