We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooklyn Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooklyn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose a creative career because the most important thing in life is happiness. Money can’t make you happy unless you’re already happy within. Being creative makes me happy. Getting paid for it is the icing on the cake. There is nothing more rewarding than creating something. Having an idea in your head and making it into a real thing, whether it be a piece of visual art, a song, a script, a comedy set, a sketch and seeing it become a real thing. Seeing something from your mind come to life is the closest thing to magic you will ever see. You have literally made something out of nothing. Then to be able to share it with others and see them enjoy it is a beautiful thing. Imagine doing something that makes you happy, and then making others happy with the same thing. It’s a reward that gets paid forward. People sometimes take art for granted and don’t realize how healing art is. Whether you are the one creating it or the one enjoying it, it is very healing to the soul and the body as well. When people are sad, they often listen to music to lift their spirits. Music has even proven to make plants grow faster and healthier. When people are bored or just need an escape from life, they read or watch tv. So the one creating art benefits from it, and then the ones consuming it are also benefiting. I believe art is just as healing as medicine. It’s so important, and I really hope schools bring back music and arts programs. We can not lose such an important part of humanity. Art literally brings people together, from all walks of life who may have never crossed paths. Sharing a common interest is a bonding experience. I’m a comedian but I’m an artist in so many other ways. I’m a song writer, I draw, I sing, I rap. Most people who are creative have more than one talent. I come from a creative family. My grandfather was a composer, he wrote for Elvis, Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin and more. My grandmother was a painter and a playwright, my mom sings, paints and draws, my sister sings, my nephew is an excellent writer and rapper. It is in my blood. And I’m happy to carry it on. I just hope whatever I do touches someone, brightens their day, makes them laugh and smile and makes my family proud.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’m a comedian and content creator. What sets me apart from others is I am me! Nobody else can be me. My brand of comedy is unique to me. I talk about my own life experiences, observations from my point of view, most of my comedy is clean and not very racy, which kind of sets me apart from a lot of female comedians. A lot of female comedians talk a lot about sexual situations and that’s not really my brand. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that subject matter. Everyone should talk about whatever they want to talk about, whatever their experiences are and whatever they find funny. But the question was what sets me apart, and that is one of the things that sets me apart. What I’m most proud about is that I write all of my material and people really rock with it! People always come up to me after my shows and tell me how funny and hilarious I am to them. I get messages in DM and comments on social media from people telling me they enjoyed my comedy, and that means a lot to me especially as a woman. Because a lot of people have this misconception that “women aren’t funny” and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Some of the most hilarious people I know are women. I’ve even had men doubt me and say things like “YOU DIDNT WRITE THAT!” It was so funny to them that they didn’t believe I wrote it. Which should be an insult but I take it as a compliment. I’m most excited about the journey I am on and seeing where it takes me. I got to where I am professionally by just trying, stepping out on faith and not giving up. I’m nowhere near where I want to be of course. I am on my grind and working hard every day. Just trying to figure things out. Everyone is on a different path and I’m still trying to carve out my path and see what works and what doesn’t work. No it wasn’t easy and it’s NOT easy. Sometimes it gets discouraging, i mean it’s already hard pursuing a career in entertainment. There is so much competition, especially in Los Angeles. So many people doing the same thing as you, so much rejection. And then throw the pandemic on top of things and it gets even more difficult. Less jobs, less stand up gigs, everyone scrambling to see where they can fit in and how they can keep working. It can get really discouraging. But every day I have to remind myself to keep moving forward. I overcome challenges by trying to keep a positive mind and positive spirit. Seeing people who are like me who were able to make it, that tells me that I can do it too. Having so many people rooting for me and believing in me, and rooting for myself. One thing I learned is to be kind to yourself. Dont beat up on yourself and talk down on yourself. Think about your favorite person in the world! the person you love THE MOST! Now think about the stuff you say about yourself and apply it to them. Would you ever say such a mean thing to someone you love? No? Then dont say it to yourself. Love yourself and be nice to yourself. Treat yourself. Do things for yourself that makes you happy. While you’re brightening other people’s day, dont forget about you. The main thing I want the world to know about my brand/story is that I have a good heart. I have a lot of love to give. I am often misunderstood by people who don’t know me. But people who know me know that I’m a softy on the inside.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a homebody, and I just got a car a few months ago, so I’m still learning the city myself. But I’m also a big kid. so the first place I would take them is Universal Studios! That place is so fun to me and I rarely get to go. I havent even seen Hogwarts yet. As soon as they open back up I’m going. I would also probably go do go kart racing, laser tag or something else fun like that. Like I said Im a big kid, and I like to hang with other adults who are also big kids lol. There is a Thai Restaurant that I really love in Koreatown, its really cute. They have an elevated outdoor patio which is really quaint. It’s a hidden gem, and their food is really good. I love botanical gardens and nature. I just love to take in the beauty of the city. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my mom. Honestly nobody is more supportive than she is. A lot of people don’t have a supportive foundation. They dont have people who believe in them and often when they want to follow a dream in the arts, their parents tell them to “get a real job”. My mom was never like that. At times she believes in me more than I believe in myself and I appreciate her so much for that. Aside from my mom, my whole family is super supportive. I’m blessed to have them. People in entertainment/actors I would like to shout out are other comedians who have looked out for me with opportunities whether it be shows, acting gigs, writing jobs, representation etc. and I really appreciate them. They are talented content creators, comedians, actors and producers, and I just want to show them some love.
