We had the good fortune of connecting with Susana Yee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susana, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance is tough when you own your own business. It is not like you can go to the office and leave at 6PM and not think about it until the next day. If you have people working with you and vendors working with you, emails are always coming in. What I have learned over the years is that I have to decide when I will stop and end each of my work days and create some space for myself and my family. There are weekends when I have a deadline and I end up working all Saturday or all Sunday and that is just how things go when you own your own business, but the great thing is, if I need to do something in the middle of the day on a weekday, I can also take that time for myself and make it up later that night or the next day.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My company is a small boutique digital marketing company that specializes in social media marketing, paid ads, and influencer marketing. My company slowly became a business as I started taking on more and more projects for companies that needed help in other areas within their marketing departments. When my clients needed more help in another areas, I was always willing and able to take on those projects as well. My philosophy is to never say no to any challenge and to make sure I learn as much as I can about what I am doing and to continue learning daily so that I can do the best job possible for my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My perfect day in LA would be something like this: Wake up and go for a walk on the beach before breakfast and then find a spot that overlooks the ocean and go have breakfast there. One of my favorite spots in LA by the beach has got to be Malibu Farm in Malibu. They have some amazing brunch dishes that include dishes with eggs or vegan dishes. You can order a tumeric drink or a coffee and listen to the ocean. After brunch I would drive us over to the Getty Villa in Malibu to walk around and spend the day enjoying the villa and the art work. For dinner, I would keep driving on PCH and stop for a lobster roll at the Broad Street Oyster Company before driving back along the PCH to have drinks in the evening at Shutters on the Beach.

Rework by Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson is a great book for anyone who owns their own company. The way to create new processes or to learn new ways of doing things in business is to keep trying and then trying some more.
