We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Roscillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, what matters most to you?
Authenticity, hands down. When I was 10 years old, I struggled with mental health and had to start taking daily medication. It made me feel so different from the rest of the kids. “Devin Roscillo, you’re needed in the nurse’s office, Devin Roscillo, to the nurses office,” I’d hear over the school intercom at 11:00 AM every single day. Can you imagine how uncomfortable that is for a 10-year-old (up until the middle of high school) to be pulled from class to go take her midday meds? Talk about feeling weird and different when I’d stand from my desk while all my peers’ heads turned to me with the same looks of judgement. Being “different” bears an entirely opposite meaning to a 10-year-old kid who just wants to feel like “one of the cool kids” than it does to an adult, who can wear that label with pride as a uniqueness. Being my true self became extremely hard for me after those repetitive experiences. When in a social situation, I made myself smaller to make others feel comfortable, I shut my mouth when it came to sharing my thoughts or dreams, and I was unapproachable. This was my MO until I was 26 years old. I was inauthentic because no amount of “me” could ever be accepted.
Then came a major turning point in my life. It was when I found personal development, started investing in conferences geared toward personal growth, and began investing my time in building a community of like minded, and growth-oriented people. When I attended my first personal development conference, Lewis Howes’ Summit of Greatness, I met a friend named Sean Bloch and he challenged me to start a mental health blog. Through writing and through finding incredible community, I finally was able to break out of my “isolation bunker” and started to experience my authentic and fully expressed self.
My life visions and goals evolved and expanded massively. When that happened, I began writing about mental health, sharing my thoughts, dreams and opinions with others, felt on the same level as my peers, and enjoyed being one of many who aspired to do more and be more.
Authenticity is now one of my core values and that’s why I help entrepreneurs live a true and self-expressed life. You deserve for your voice to be heard and for your personality to shine, because people who are big and bold make waves and have a huge impact in the world. That all begins with becoming your authentic self.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets me apart from others? You could call me both a hard-ass and a space-holder…Anyone who has been coached by me will tell you that what sets me apart from others is my personality, and I agree. I have this “let’s go outside your comfort zone and get it!” and an “I’m not taking ‘I don’t know’ as an answer” mentality. But on top of that, I also have such a compassionate and relatable side to me, which I blend together really dynamically when working with my clients. My personality and style as a coach is multifaceted and because of it I’m able to hold space for my clients and others in an incredibly valuable way.
One of my past clients recently told me, “You are extremely loving and you give so much of yourself in everything that you do. You are very open and it makes it easy for people to relate to you, yet you have this no b.s. mentality.” I think she summarized me as a coach pretty well! That is definitely what sets me apart from others, my no B.S. mentality and compassionate, relatable nature.
What am I most excited about?
What really excites me is opportunity. The idea that every new person you meet, every new place you go, and every action you take can lead to a new opportunity for both you and for others is absolutely energizing and exciting to me. It’s what’s shaped me into a driven and ambitious person and what excites me to get up every day.
How did I get to where I am today?
My professional career began as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Fast forward 4.5 years, I arrived at work on a rainy Wednesday, parked my car in the lot, and tears started streaming down my face in waterfall fashion (you’d think I cry every day by reading this feature, wouldn’t you?). This job represented a limited ability to serve my patients in a way that made a true impact, and ultimately meant that I wasn’t living up to my fullest potential. It wasn’t until this moment that I truly admitted speech was not my purpose. Two weeks later, I walked out of the building for the last time.
What this experience taught me was that every day thereafter would be spent contributing to my purpose: serving others in an unlimited capacity, showing them how to live up to their fullest potential and become the limitless versions of themselves.
Ultimately, what it really took was massive self-awareness, acknowledging what was and wasn’t my purpose, and then taking responsibility for what I wanted to create for my future and the impact I wanted to make in this world. My mission is to create a ripple effect in the world with the message that: every human has this limitless potential and it’s on us to choose our limitless lives. With perseverance and resilience, we can achieve anything. If I had to boil it down to one thing, my resilience is what got me here.
Was it easy?
Absolutely not. It took me 4.5 years of being unfulfilled to decide that it was time to start pursuing my true purpose. Now I’m 1.5 years into my business, and each step has presented a different challenge. However, these challenges have always been ones that I could remedy and rise above while creating an even bigger and better outcome. For example, in my marriage I realized that I was unfulfilled and that I wouldn’t be able to create the life I envision if I stayed in it. That led to dissolving my marriage and choosing me first. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made, followed by the most challenging 9 months after, full of unknowns, feeling lost and without purpose, emotional upheaval, business setbacks, and massive transformation and energetic shifting (which isn’t always easy, trust me!). That said, I believe we need obstacles to become better versions of ourselves and to create the impact and growth in our businesses we desire. Challenges are opportunities for us to learn and grow, by taking ownership of your actions and outcomes, leaning on your network and adding support within that network, and building resilience and persistence.
How did I overcome those challenges?
I persisted. No matter what. Leaving my full-time job and going through my divorce were two of the hardest things I’ve had to do. They truly rocked me on an emotional level. The thing is though, that I put a support system in place for myself. When I started my business, I hired a coach who taught me the ways. When I started my divorce, I hired a coach who guided me through the ups and downs. On top of coaching, I made sure to surround myself with my friends and family and build my community up even more. I also chose myself above all else during those times, and ensured that I prioritize time for self-care and self-love because restoring my energy and my mental and emotional balance is far more beneficial than trying to pour depleted energy into the people you’re serving. Because I took care of myself and surrounded myself with support and nurturing coaches, I was able to serve more fully and ultimately make it through all of those challenges with more strength and grit than ever before.
What are the lessons I’ve learned along the way?
I have learned so many valuable lessons. The top three lessons I’ve received are:
Lead with love (thank you, Ryan Hartley for always teaching me this). Aka: work to serve others. Keep your attention focused on service and impact, and everything else will fall into place.
New level, new devil. (Also thank you to Ryan Hartley. I guess you could say he’s a wise man!)
Lean into resilience, and you’ll always come out stronger. This one I learned from getting back up over and over again, and never surrendering to external or internal circumstances. All they really are is tests on your determination. Always stand back up.
What do I want the world to know about my brand and story?
My story is one that will teach you to overcome adversity, challenges, and massive speed bumps. When you have my support, you will absolutely realize your limitless potential, and we’ll get you there. Have trust in that, and you’ll achieve all of your life’s dreams, visions and beyond.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am brand-spanking-new to L.A. and I can’t wait to discover all the incredible spots this wonderful city has to offer. Please reach out on Instagram and let me know YOUR favorite spots so I can explore them! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh there are a number of people I truly want to acknowledge. I’ll cap it at 3!
My first acknowledgement is for Sean Steven Bloch, documentary filmmaker and creator of the Soul Tears Podcast. I really honor Sean for his courage in putting out this podcast, where he and his guests share “Soul Tears” moments that reveal how their life changed from these magical ah-ha-type moments. The reason I value Sean so much is because he was the catalyst to my truly opening up and sharing my stories vulnerably. I had never shared my mental health struggles with people before he encouraged me to start a blog about my challenges and victories. It’s because of him that I am where I am now, coaching incredible women, and enabling them to become fully self-expressed and soul-aligned people.
My second acknowledgement is for Danielle Laura, who taught me all about the importance of self-loyalty and choosing me first. She guided me through my divorce and all the identity and purpose struggles that came with it. I can’t thank her enough.
Finally, I want to acknowledge all of my clients who started my coaching journey with me, and have stayed with me for my entire entrepreneurial journey to date. Clients don’t always know it, but they help and fuel us coaches just as much as we support and guide them to success.
