We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayila and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mayila, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
After this previous year, I think we’ve all been faced with this question in one form or another. How do we know whether to keep going or to give up. In my opinion, giving up is never an option. Maybe there are times when we need to take long breaks or when we need to sit down and recuperate but giving up is not an option.
Life is not a race, it’s a marathon; sometimes we sprint and at other times we jog. Sometimes we transition from a jog to a slow walk. But the moral of the story is we never stop moving. We keep going and we never give up!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an artist and songwriter and it took me years to be able to actually do it professionally. I’ve always been singing and writing songs since I was a kid but I had no idea what it took to actually make it your profession. What I learned is it takes a lot of getting to know the right people and countless hours of work. It wasn’t until the last 6 or 7 years that I finally found my rhythm with this. I learned the importance of self-reliance but also of collaboration. I learned to keep my friends close and my enemies nowhere in sight. I learned that sometimes you have to be your own best friend and manager. There are a lot of life lessons in this short period of time that I’ve come away with that has completely elevated my thinking and I’m so grateful for that.
I think no matter what it is you wanna do, do it fiercely, with passion and determination. No way you can lose with that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Gotta go to Thai Town, anywhere in Thai Town. The food is sooo good!!
Also you haven’t fully visited California if you haven’t had In n Out! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my success to my mom. Without her continued support and belief in me I probably wouldn’t have been able to believe in myself as much as I do. She’s the nucleus that keeps me together and I love her forever.
