We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Blair and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always loved Halloween and horror movies. I had recently started my own haunted attraction and made a lot of my own props and masks for it. My masks immediately started to draw the attention of other haunts who wanted to start purchasing them. I created Pumpkin Pulp and started to focus on creating high quality masks for the haunted attraction industry.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started out doing sculptures and artwork for family fun centers and museums. These were mainly fun cartoon or realistic pieces. I enjoyed it but never felt like I had my niche. Business was always hot and cold and was never steady. It was really hard to make a living at it with any consistency. I always loved horror but never thought I could make a living at it. When I started doing some of my own horror masks they immediately started to draw attention. I created my own look for my masks and when finished they had a grungy look like no other. Business began to quickly take off and started to draw attention in the industry. One of the other main problems I saw with other companies was they were never consistent or didn’t deliver their products at all. I made sure that my clients got exactly what they wanted and made sure to never miss a deadline. With the larger my catalog got the more business began to roll in.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would hit Halloween Horror Nights and every haunted attraction, ghost tour, and true crime tour there was to offer. During the day we would have to hit Halloween Depot. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to give a big shout out to artists like Rick Baker, Tom Savini, and Stan Winston for setting me on the path to my dreams!
