Meet Ginger Nichelle: Fashion Designer & Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ginger Nichelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ginger, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Working the fashion industry isn’t as glamorous as everyone thinks it is. It’s not full of beautiful models, runway shows, red carpet events, and jet setting around the world for inspiration. It is, but it isn’t. There’s a lot of work, networking, marketing yourself, staying up on trends, tears (because it’s your art), not getting everything you want, and constantly trying new things out of your comfort zone. It’s the type of industry where you have to love what you do otherwise you will get burnt out real quick.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I truly think what sets me apart is that I pull my inspiration from unexpected places. From being a comic book and anime geek from a young age, my childhood was filled with bright colors, magical girls, and superheroes. I took my love of comic books and anime and put that into my art. I even remember in school when I was designing collections that were inspired by Lolita fashion, Anime, and florals, only my professor understood my vision. The rest of my classmates thought it was weird and not on trend, however, 6-8 months later Lady Gaga & Nicki Minaj came out wearing big hair bows and eccentric looks that was inspired by Anime, and comics.

Getting to where I am today where I am comfortable with how I design and what I present to the world was not easy. I still have self doubt even now time to time, but what has helped me is to remember that I am on my own journey. I am creating what I love and making my dreams come to reality. I may not be a household name yet, but I have grown so much over the years as a designer and a business woman. I have grown from working on everything myself, to hiring interns, and a personal assistant. I have done runway shows in New York and even looking into applying to international fashion shows. I have learned that there is a lot of trial and error in what I do and create, and I need to keep pushing myself to try new techniques and to think out the box.

I would like the world to know that my brand is truly unique, but also very much me. I want people to enjoy learning who I am while I express myself through my brand aesthetic and clothing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend came to visit, I would first take them to my favorite all you can eat sushi place in Santa Clarita, Ichiban Sushi. It’s a bit outside LA, but it’s sooooo good. You get so much for a good AYCE price! I would also take them to a theme park, probably Universal Studios, because it’s the type of park you can walk around and enjoy the shows and mini rides without the need to do big rollercoaster rides and get tired of a big park like Disneyland or Six Flags.. Another place I’d take them is the Federal Bar in North Hollywood. It’s a great place to get drinks, and brunch! One of my favorite brunch place closed years ago, but the Federal Bar is great too! Another fun touristy place I’d take them is to Griffith Park so they could see the view of the city and Hollywood sign from the Observatory.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout to my family that has always supported my dreams and my art. From a young age, I always knew I wanted to to be a designer, so my parents put me in art classes, sewing classes and helped me search for Design schools once I was in high school. I’d also like to give a shoutout to my friends that have always supported me and my designs. Even if they couldn’t buy from me all the time, they made sure to come to my fashion shows, cheer for me, and talk me through any times when I’m feeling low.
