We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Candler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
NaturSense is a family company. We started in 2014, with an eye toward making simple, natural products. We chose Organic Aloe Vera as our core product because it had so many benefits to healthy skin.

Most of the Aloe Vera you buy at the grocery or drugstore is this sticky, goopy stuff that doesn’t have much aloe in it; and is filled with chemicals that actually work against you. I grew up in Southern California and got plenty of sun as a swimmer and surfer. We had an aloe plant in the yard, and I would cut a little piece and use the juice to soothe my sunburns.

We wanted an Aloe Gel that worked as well as the fresh plant – so we decided to make it ourselves.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I swam in high school, so in 2001 I joined the Navy and became a Helicopter Search and Rescue Swimmer. After five years of service I went to undergrad in San Diego and graduated in 2009 with a business degree. This was not a fantastic year for job hunting, so I took an opportunity to travel through Australia and southeast Asia to teach SCUBA diving.

I came back home in 2011, spent a year in New York working and studying for the GMAT. I was accepted at USC for grad school and was able to move back home to Los Angeles. I worked in finance until recently, when I decided to join the family business on a permanent basis.

My career path was certainly not a straight line, but I believe diversity in experiences is a good thing. I’m proud that I’ve seen a lot of the world, had very different lines of work. Of course I wonder what my life would have been like if I’d had a single career after the Navy, or decided to stay in the military until retirement. It’s a fun thought experiment, but I’m happy I had the opportunity to see the world and have those experiences.

My takeaway: Squeeze every drop out of life. You’ll thank yourself for it later.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve been a tour guide for Los Angeles a few times so this is fun. Pick them up at LAX, and instead of bumming them out by taking them on the 405 – head west and show them the beach first. Get lunch in Manhattan Beach and get their toes in the sand. Grab food at the Kettle, or a drink at Shellback Tavern.

Then you brave the 405N/10E and take them Downtown at night for the great restaurants and some cool nightlife. Obviously too many to list, but how about KazuNori for dinner and the Edison for a unique lounge experience?

Next day is Griffith Observatory in the day and lunch in Silverlake. Again, too many to list but Pine and Crane has a cool view so let’s see if they have a table. Then you take Sunset down to West Hollywood and catch a live show or the Comedy Store.

Day three: Road trip. We’re getting breakfast in Santa Monica, and taking PCH up to Malibu spending a little time at La Piedra. Lunch at Neptune’s, then back down to take Malibu or Topanga Canyon to the Valley. Sushi on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks.

Then you go watch a taping, see the shark at Universal, check out the Peterson Auto Museum and stand under the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to credit the Boy Scouts of America. We were very active as a family, and it is part of the foundation that makes us so close today.
