We had the good fortune of connecting with Andy Kay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I would have to say diversity, having a-lot of people that have multiple skills and multiple interest.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We work internationally and have more abilities than most investigations companies. For instance, a lot of private investigators only do surveillance and maybe some background checks, but that is just the tip of the ice berg for our company. At Kay and Associates Investigations, we have experts in asset location, missing persons, international fraud and theft, asset protection, digital forensics, divorce and custody battles, in-depth background searches, murder investigations, and post conviction, just to name a few. And that is not mentioning our drones and our ability to utilize and operate drones on investigations. Our international investigations ability definitely sets us far apart from other investigation companies as well. We’ve been under the same license for 30 years. We don’t combine cumulative years of experience in the office to make it sound like we’ve been around longer than we have like a lot of detective agencies do.
What makes me so unique as a private investigator is the life experience and background of abilities that I bring to the table. Yes I have been licensed since 1992 as a P.I., but I am also licensed as A/B General Contractor and Engineer, I have my Pilot’s license, I’m a grading and paving contractor, I am an expert in real estate development and transactional law, I am an expert in OSHA requirements and certifications… It also doesn’t hurt that my years in the industry have made it so that I am friends with many of the big hotels, restaurants, and bar owners. We have a great report with past clients and with other associations that we have developed over the last 30 years, allowing us access to many locations and delicate information that other investigators do not have.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First of all, I am way too busy with work to fill up a weeks schedule worth of things to do for a friend visiting from out of town. When my friends visit, it’s generally for a shorter time because we are all very busy with work and our families. But I would plan a very cool day for us to spend together.
If my friend run from out of town, I would take them to my favorite spot in LA which is Griffith Observatory. I am a bit of an astronomy nerd and the view up there is absolutely the best view in Los Angeles. After that I would probably take them to Water Grille because they have great oysters, a great ambience, and I’m sure my friend would want to go see the Santa Monica pier, as most of my friends who visit want to do. Then I would take them for a drive up PCH Zuma Beach where it is a little less crowded and a great photo spot.
Before Covid, I would have had a long list of other great spots that I would take my friend, but so many of them have been shut down and the hours are so different in the experience is just not the same anymore, so my favorite spots have most definitely been dwindled down. For dinner I would definitely cook at my house, because my family loves to do dinner together, as a matter of fact we make dinner as a family almost every single night. So for me, that’s the best quality time to spend with my friend and family. It doesn’t hurt that we have a pool table at home so most of the time my friends and I end up playing a number of games on that while the kids play Pac-Man on the arcade we have at home, too.
