We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Chu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
While there is always a hope that many will enjoy the designs I create as much as I do, the amount of interest surrounding each project I make helps me to better understand what my clients like. I believe this approach of my design process has a degree of risk taking that has allowed me to improve as an artist over time.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is heavily inspired by video games and Internet meme culture, both of which have been a part of my interests for several years. I began doing design work for CSULB’s Esports club and the years of experience shaped my design style for years to come, even during my tenure as a professional graphic designer at CYBERPOWERPC. While some criticism can be disheartening, especially when your audience is solely from the Internet, there are many pieces of advice that had helped me to grow as an artist.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I would take my best friend to the Long Beach Aquarium or the LA Zoo, followed by dine in places in Downtown LA such as Grand Central Market. I would likely finish the day by showing them around at Santa Monica Pier.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I really want to thank my mom who inspired me to do what I love and not be afraid of starting something new. Regardless of how busy she was from her job and taking care of the family, she always found time to learn new things.
