We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanel Temple and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chanel, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
The concept of happiness is innately subjective but for me, makeup is the first thing that came to mind. The act of doing makeup brings an immense amount of joy to my life and has been a great source of happiness. In many ways, makeup has been my guiding light through life. That may sound very vapid but makeup has provided me a creative outlet, a career, a form of emotional protection and a way to connect with like-minded people all of the world.

Some of my best memories involve makeup. I remember watching my mother get ready in the morning as a little girl and was enamored by the transformation. Going to the makeup counter was my version of the candy store. I so desperately wanted to grow up so I could be like those beautiful women behind the counter. Buying my first lip gloss was a life changing for me, it was all over from there. I was transported into a different world where I could be anyone I wanted. In that moment I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist and make people feel beautiful. Makeup helped hide a lot of insecurities I had when I was younger. It became my shield.

I have been a working as a makeup artist over 10 years now and can still confidently say that I am my best self when I am painting faces. Locally and globally through the power of social media, I have the privilege of connecting with other makeup lovers daily. Not having the ability to do my job over the last year due to lockdown has been difficult but just another reminder that I’m on the right path, doing what makes me happiest.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m so proud of the trajectory of my career in the makeup industry and honestly, i’m nowhere near where I want to be! I started at counter, working my way up to the global makeup artist that I am today. I’ve learned to stay humble and treat every experience as a learning opportunity. I had many moments of feeling discouraged or jealous of someone else’s success or the job opportunities they were given over me but I try to remember that if something is meant for me, it won’t pass me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a very food focused person so if anyone comes to visit we are doing a food tour with some occasional bar stops. From the iconic mushroom toast at Gjelina in Venice to the best al pastor tacos at Leo’s taco truck in Mid City. LA has some of the best food in the world and constantly opening new restaurants so theres always so much to see and do.

Some of my must visit spots are Republique, Felix, EP & LP rooftop bar, Hippo, Freehand Hotel rooftop and Bar Ama.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m so grateful for the mentors (Marc, Hannah, Cerre, Caroline, Vanessa) I have had in my career, guiding my artistry and helping me push myself to be better.
