We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorelle Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorelle, what inspires you?
Nature and painting from life. Also personal emotions and experiences that well up from my inner world and need to be expressed in some manner.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always been an artist, there was no question about it. I was a sensitive and creative person from the start. I worked professionally as a Medical Illustrator and Graphic Arts manager in the Biomedical Industry for 25+ years. I have been a teaching artist and professional fine artist for about 24 years and an International street painting artist doing hundreds of festivals and professional projects for over 22 years. I raised a family (3 sons) while doing all of it. It was challenging to say the least, recessions, family emergencies, lots of animals, but I never ever stopped doing what I love to do. I sculpted stone, threw pots, painted from life, wrote poetry, taught, earned money to support my family along with my husband. No stone was left unturned. I have developed a reputation, what you call a brand now a days, I guess, people buy my art, request my talents on projects for murals and street painting pieces and I presently teach for the Segerstroms Performing Arts Center.I have gotten to where I have projects coming to me all the time, at least until the pandemic!! What sets me apart, I am not sure, but I try to do my best work, I show up and am a team player. Maybe my internal voice is what attracts people to my work, I have spent a lifetime developing my work and it seems to speak to some people. I suppose that is what art is… an expression or interpretation of how you see the world, both internally and externally. Last year I did a huge collaborative Street painting Installation, “The Garden of Wonders”, that I was so thrilled to do in Venice Florida at their Chalk Festival. It was a dream project come true. I can hardly believe it came to fruition, but it did and was glorious! Here is the You Tube link for a video on the project https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBBoJq7kQ9E&t=2s One lesson I would say is by far my best advice…. Never stop, never give up on something that is a part of you that you must do. It will carry you through beyond anything outside of yourself. This passion is your life raft, what will keep you alive and happy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Huntington Library Descanso Gardens The Aboretum Ventura Beach The Getty Norton Simon Museum The Griffith Park Observatory Travel Town I don’t eat out much honestly but most of those places have cool eateries, or you can bring a picnic. ALso the Noise Within Playhouse!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My many teachers of course and there have been a lot. My family has always been supportive, Honestly it probably is my husband Warren Miller who goes with me plein air painting even though he does not paint. He does his own thing and waits patiently while I work. He has held down the fort whenever I have travelled for my street painting projects, and does whatever I need to support my efforts in the arts. He himself is a great appreciator of the arts and loves that he is married to a creative. We have been married 40 years now, so as I look back and acknowledge all the support he has given me over the years, there really is not question. He is my shoutout.
