We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabine Meyer zu Reckendorf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabine, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think for me taking risks are just challenges that I like to take on,like moving to LA from Germany without speaking much English or knowing anyone there or starting my own business;not working as a commercial designer but designing and building the things I want to build. I love to experiment and do things that I have never done before.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my artwork these days I use a lot of found objects from thrift stores and what friends collect for me. I have a little machine shop with a lathe, milling machine and other tools where I can change these materials into what I need to build creatures, robots and kinetic art.
In our garden I build large sculptures out of concrete, steel, ceramic tile and aluminum, including two 15’ tall towers you can walk into and that are completely covered in glass and ceramic tile.
What I am proud of is that my artwork makes people happy and smile.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A lot of credit goes to my wonderful husband,Kent Johnson, for his constant support and encouragement. Also the artist community and friends have been very supportive.
Special thanks to Dulce Stein,Gail and Fred Tieken, the Red Hen Press and
Annett Hoffmann and Gabriele Prill for all the help ,encouragement and exhibition opportunities.
