We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddy Cristall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maddy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I want to devote my life to writing love letters to music due to my unreasonable love for words and sound. I feel like the intersection of the two is where I feel the most alive. This is such a male-dominated industry so I wanted to create a platform for myself and others that not only welcomes but celebrates all voices.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write about music, develop scripts and promote musicians. This requires an eclectic array of different creative hats, but luckily for me, I have always loved a good chapeau. I work for the largest Canadian broadcasting company along with different television and film networks.
I also started two of my own companies that celebrate my affinity towards music. The first being Pulp Publicity- an artist development firm that promotes musicians in diverse ways. The second, is Citrus Magazine- an online publication dedicated to music journalism. Neither of them has anything to do with fruit but are built around a zest for music and juicy journalism…get it? *Laughs to myself…
My brand is about being bold, brazen and boisterous. This industry can often seem grim and exclusive, I want to help change that narrative.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I do live in Vancouver, BC but I adore LA. So, I would take them to the Library Bar after a nice day of digesting books. Good Times at Davey Waynes is a must, The Roger Room is always fun, Sassafras Saloon is the best and The Edison is stunning.
I love renting a bike and going through Echo Park to hit up all the thrift stores as well. Plus, there is so so so so so much good Mexican food in LA it makes me want to cry happy tears.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, I love this! Secondly, I would love to give a shoutout to my mother Nora Cristall for always supporting my dreams no matter how lofty they may be. She is also a writer and scholar who kicks serious tuchus in her industry of social work.
