We had the good fortune of connecting with Bayardo De Murguia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bayardo, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’m the type that likes to look at all the pros and cons before making a decision. Sometimes I even overthink it just to think about it again and again. Then at some point, I check my gut feeling and just make a move. This includes taking a big risk where I don’t know what the outcome will be. Despite your preparation and research, you might have to make a decision where you are teetering on the unknown. This is ok. This is what will separate you from those that stay in the safe zone and stay constant, or those that are constantly moving and progressing forward.
In my career as an artist, I’ve had to make countless decisions where there was a risk. Some big, some small, it always feels like there is something at stake. Coming to Los Angeles, there isn’t a set guideline on how to navigate the entertainment industry. You learn from your own and other’s experiences and try to make the best decisions for yourself along the way. What project to work on, what reps to use, where to study, how to pay rent, where to live, who to trust. They all have their individual risk/rewards. What I have learned is that it will always be ok to jump and take risks. If it doesn’t go our way, that’s ok. We learn from it and keep going. Its not about how bad you want it, its about how long you can want it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Bayardo De Murguia and I am an actor living in Los Angeles. My family immigrated to the US when I was young to pursue the “American dream”. For them, that meant providing for their family and making sure that we received a good education. As I got older, I realized that we all were just a family of artists.
As a football player at the University of San Diego, I fell in love with theater after taking my first drama class. As I continued studying, I realized that telling stories and moving people was what I wanted to do. Fast forward a couple years later and I am a working actor in Los Angeles, recently playing Ramon Costa in Netflix’s Tiny Pretty Things.
There was never a Plan B for me. If things didn’t work out, I didn’t have another place to go to. I’m proud of the hard work put in, but I’m also reminded that I have to work even harder. Things can be taken away at an instant. I was asked once if I had a mentor, and although I’ve had wonderful people come across my path, I’ve realized that I’m a product of everyone I’ve come across good and bad. A product of the city of Los Angeles. My success is your success. My community comes from the hospitality workers i’ve worked with, artists i’ve worked with and been inspired by, and just everyday people that have touched me along the way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Get ready, its going to be a long one.
First, we would rent a motorcycle for them, because that is how I like to get around Los Angeles. We would start with a quick ride through Griffith Park and have breakfast at the Alcove/Big Bar in Los Feliz. Lunch time would take us to Santa Monica and up the coast via Pacific Highway. We’d cut into the canyons and find ourselves having a late lunch at The Old Place in Cornell.
We’d then put the bikes away and then head into town starting with drinks in West Hollywood at Employee’s Only. Then we would visit these bars in no particular order haha:
Jones- Bartender’s Banquet is amazing
Melrose Umbrella Co
Death and Co
Harvard and Stone
Las Perlas
The night would end at a wonderful Taco truck in East LA
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be here without the love and support of my parents and family. We immigrated to the United States from Mexico and although my parents didn’t know much about the entertainment industry, they taught me to always be a good person, treat others the way I wanted to be treated, and to never lose my sense of humor.
I also would love to give a shoutout to writer/producer Gabriela Fresquez. She has been with me throughout my journey as an artist, and I am so grateful to have her in my life. I can also celebrate all her accomplishments as she’s taught me what it means to take risks and be ambitious.
