Meet Ainamkoz Yemzharova | Director/Writer/1st AD

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ainamkoz Yemzharova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ainamkoz, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I was born in Kazakhstan and always dreamed about working or studying in the United States. In 2018 I won “Bolashak” scholarship in my country and got into New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. I’m an only child, never lived abroad before. So it was risky and life changing decision for me. I left my hometown, my friends and my loved one at that moment. I had culture shock, it took 6 moths to get used to a new life. But it was worth it. I got new experience, new friends and a lot of good memories. So taking risks is a part of a life to grow. And I still do it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My first serious work was historical short film about starvation in Kazakhstan in 1930th. It was challenging not only creatively but also emotionally. Communication is the key in film industry. I think now with my experience I’m getting better and better. My second movie “Gulmira” was about domestic violence. After everything that I’ve been through this set was easier. I already knew what problems we can face. Pre production went smoother. So it was even fun to shoot it because I chose my crew.
Right now I’m writing feature script which is different from my previous works. I love to find new ways to show the inner emotional change through visuals and sound. I think the main thing is not to put yourself a tag. I like experimenting and trying new genres.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My hometown Almaty is a very beautiful place with different landscapes. So probably we will go outdoor speed skating rink Medeu. To enjoy fresh air and breathtaking mountain views. Then drive to Kolsay lake. To try traditional meals, see Kaindy lake where trees rise above the surface of the lake. Meet hospitable people in the village. Also we can go to Charyn Canyon which looks like Grand Canyon to take pictures and explore Kazakh history. We can camp in Altyn-Emel National Park, drink horse milk while watching beautiful sunsets. I can go on and on with this itinerary. I think overall the best thing is to have a good company.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There were a lot of people who helped me to become the person who I am right now. One of them is my directing instructor from NYFA Paul Yates. His experience in life, his work and attitude helped me to become more creative, open minded and brave. Also thanks to my friends that I found at NYFA, who now I work with on a different projects. It is crucial to find your circle where you can be yourself and create together something special to your heart.
