Meet Jalen Nelson | Fashion Content Creator and Marketing Mentor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalen Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jalen, how do you think about risk?
I personally love risks! A lot of people are afraid of risks and they’re afraid to take them but that risk you’re afraid to take will be the risk that ultimately changes your life. Before I started taking risks, my life was very much at a stance of just being comfortable. And the thing is, taking a risk could either be a win or lose situation but the point is you took a risk and now you feel more confident to do things. I started getting extremely consistent with my content this year and started taking major risks. I didn’t know it was going to get me this far in my career but it did. So if there’s anyone who wants or needs advice on taking risks, just take them. You never know what can come out of them, my entire career changed in 6 months just from taking a risk!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is very much a reflection of me and what I’ve gone through. A lot of the times when I create something, it comes from a personal struggle I had to deal with. Creating is kind of like therapy for me with things that I didn’t know how to deal with. A lot of my creative art comes from healing and trauma I used to face when I was younger and I’m so proud of myself for getting through it and still remaining consistent in my craft. The road was not an easy one as I endured a lot of bullying, derogatory words, and overall disrespect. I overcame that through prayer, remaining true to myself and believing in myself when others made fun of me. I can simply say that I got here today through being consistent and sticking true to my brand and who I am as a person. But I think it’s also about having faith even when you think nothing is going to happen for you. You have to push even when you don’t see nothing happening and that’s real. The reason why I take pride in my brand and my story is because lickmyfashion represents being yourself unapologetically but in a classy way. Be yourself without being a rebel if that makes sense. I want people to wear what they want to wear and be be comfortable in their own skin. Living in this world comes with a lot of closed boxes but break that box and be you, who cares what other people think.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a good one! Toronto I don’t think it’s that exciting but what I will say is that they have the greatest food spots!

If my best friend came into town I would first start off with having them settled in and catching up on life. I find that when people visit others, everyone is very quick to experience and enjoy but nobody wants to catch up on how others are doing
mentally and that’s how I would start the trip when she arrives. They we would plan out what we are doing for the week in terms activities and events. I would definitely take my best friend to try different food restaurants for sure, the food in the city is incredible so we would definitely try different foods. I also think I would take her to the amusement park in our city because it is a highlight in our city. I’m very spontaneous so my best friend would be down for whatever I throw at her, so that’s how that would go!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love this! First and foremost I would have to shout out God because without him, my life wouldn’t be where I am today. Everything that I have and own is because of God and continues to show me that I’m capable of achieving anything I want in this life. Following up on that I would love to shout out my Best friend Tova for always being there for me through anything for me. When I wanted to give up, she pushed me and told me to keep going and I love her so much for that. She’s the true definition of loyal. I want to shout out my Mother for always being there for me and never giving up on the dreams I wanted to pursue, she always believed in me despite anyone’s opinions. My father is the last shout out! He was the one who put me onto Fashion and if I didn’t know Fashion I probably wouldn’t be pursuing it today!
