Meet Skylar Cleveland | Beauty Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylar Cleveland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skylar, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The most important decision I have made that has contributed to my success and the success of my business was deciding to persevere despite any obstacle that may be present in my life. When trying to accomplish your goals the journey will never be perfect, if I had let any of my obstacles get in my way I would be nowhere near the goals I have accomplished today. I had nothing close to an easy childhood and to add on to that ,in 2016 in the midsts of my parents separation, my little brother was diagnosed with brain cancer at 15 years old. It was some of the hardest news I had to cope with as a 18 year old big sister. I had so many obstacles come across my way in all aspects of my life. Instead of letting each obstacle knock me down I would use it as fuel to keep trying. I started my natural beauty business,Simply Crowned Organics, at 22 years old in January of 2021. I wanted to be able to still make a difference while working indoors to lower my brothers chances of getting the virus due to his diagnosis and treatment. Our products are all created by me and are all chemical-free and lack all carcinogens.Since then I have found tons of joy in helping women express and love their natural beauty with our products still despite any obstacle that comes our way.

What should our readers know about your business?
Starting a business is not easy. Along the way I have learned to take action towards business goals even when everything doesn’t feel like it’s perfect or ready. Having a business requires learning practically everyday and there’s always going to be more to learn. When a challenge arrises I would try to look at it as a learning opportunity rather than a failure. Simply Crowned Organics is different from other businesses because good health all around is our main goal. We promote healthy ingredients and being happy with your natural self mentally and physically. I do research on every product and I truly use my products on a daily basis. The story of Simply Crowned Organics has not been easy but it has been a story of growth despite obstacles and standing on the core values of loving your natural self. I am excited for my business to keep growing and to be able to give back as much as possible. I also host a pop-up shop called Look Alive IE and I hope to incorporate my business and bring together more local small business owners and artists in the area.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them for a steam treatment at Fullbawdy by Ariana, Then to a Look Alive IE event. I would eat jamaican food at Island Breeze or eat at the forum blues cafe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God works everyday through my little brother Lezdy Rodriguez to show me everyday what it means to be a boss! Still fighting brain cancer he is nothing shy of the most giving young man you could meet. He started a Non-profit organization bringing goodie bags to children fighting cancer stuck in hospitals. I do my best to donate some of our sales to his organization, he has brought hundreds of goodie bags to hospitals on holidays and special events. Also a special thank you to Sammy, Grandma Lyn, Andrew, my mom, my bff Ariana & my beautiful brand ambassadors! my business wouldn’t be what it is if I didn’t have them to help me out with pop-ups and orders when I couldn’t do it all.
