We had the good fortune of connecting with JB/Collin Black/Franklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JB/Collin, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind our success is consistency. In our experience, incremental progress is what leads to breakthroughs. Picasso said, “Inspiration exists, but it must find you working.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our main artistic outlet is a style of music that we refer to as “retrofuture”. It’s a fusion of dance music, soul and hip-hop by a duo whose creative partnership began as an athletic partnership. One of us is a native Angelino, while the other grew up in Houston, Texas. We both went to Iowa State University on football scholarships and forged a strong bond as friends and teammates long before ever making music together. A similar appreciation for music was always a large part of our connection and evolved into a creative project a few years after graduating.

Now we create music that feels good to us and generally has a message of love and positivity. Our interest is in making music that lasts.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The thing we both appreciate about LA is that no matter what you’re into, there’s something for everyone. So making an itinerary for a visiting friend is dependent on the friend and their interests. One thing that both of us are into that we’d probably recommend to everyone is exploring the beauty of the outdoors – specifically the hikes, beaches, and parks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
