We had the good fortune of connecting with AC Tatum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi AC, what do you attribute your success to?
I have no doubt in my mind that my commitment to consistency is the most important factor behind my own personal success. And I emphasize “personal success” because I believe that the idea of success is completely subjective, personal to the individual. Success for one person might mean leaving a positive legacy. For another, it might mean making 100 million dollars. I try not to place a value judgement on someone’s idea of success, but I think the main thing that differentiates those who achieve “success” from those who don’t is the ability to commit to the process. On those days where you feel like you don’t have any motivation to continue, that commitment to consistency is what’s going to get you through. I’m a true believe in incremental progress.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what makes my music unique is that I have been settled into my own artistry for over a decade. I don’t chase a sound, I create my own sound. I take every lyric seriously — I don’t throw away any lines or just try to finish a song. Whether it takes me 20 minutes or 5 days, I don’t consider a song complete until I can listen all the way through and stand firmly behind the song and what it represents. And, I think most importantly, my art is riddled with *my* perspective — you’d literally have to go through the things I’ve gone through to create this sound. It’s just not replicable.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a best friend of mine was visiting Pasadena, I’d first take us on a trip to Perry’s Joint — a black owned sandwich restaurant in the northern part of Pasadena with the best turkey sandwich (order the “Hip Bird” and thank me later). Even greater than their sandwiches is the positive impact that Perry’s has on the community. Back to school drives, fundraisers, and providing a safe haven for the community are just some of the things Perry’s Joint does. When I think Pasadena, I think Perry’s.
For evening plans, I’d probably take my friend down to Old Town Pasadena to do some shopping and check out the fancier part of town. Pasta at Mi Piace would probably be the move. Maybe an escape room or shoot pool after that — something fun with a beer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to the nonbelievers.
