We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Coulter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
My business has taught me many lessons, however, the success from my business has taught me the most. I want to set the foundation prior to sharing exactly what my business success has taught me. When I obtained the LLC for Advantage Health Now, I thought, “hey, let me get this LLC to protect my side hustle.” As time proceeded, my side hustle turned in to my full-time career that I absolutely love, adore, and do not take for granted. Prior to the transition from employee to entrepreneur, I worked in Corporate America and as a Black woman, I must say, it was one of the hardest things for me. Being undervalued and having to deal with workplace abuse exhausted me, however, I often felt that this is all that my professional life had to offer me. I was never made to feel as though I was an asset to the organizations that I worked for and left me feeling void of professional worth.
Once I got out of my own way, my business began to thrive, and I was able to comfortably leave my 9-5 gig. So, what did my business success teach me, BET ON ME AT ALL COST! Sometimes, the individuals that see the winner that is inside of you will continue to abuse you, knock you down, devalue you, (insert whatever term here), to make sure you fail and do not reach your highest potential. Honestly, I hate the term hater because I’ve always wondered, who do you think you are to think you have a “hater?” Where are these “haters” that you speak of? Nonetheless, sometimes they are or maybe are not haters, HOWEVER, we do know that they are not cheerleaders, and their views are of zero value.
As I mentioned, I always bet on me because I will always make sure that I win!
What should our readers know about your business?
Advantage Health Now is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consulting firm that assists organizations in developing and executing culturally sensitive programming to help expand their consumer and employee base. We do this by analyzing current programming and providing curated options that will help leverage your client base via partnerships and tailored programs.
What sets us apart from others is we opt not to use mainstream terms associated. with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We never want organizations and individuals to think that we are performative and a part of “status quo.”
Our business works with organizations that really seek out change and desire to know the real from the manufactured Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
One of the lessons I’ve learned is, what is for me is for me. I refuse to chase after business! Business you chase after is not meant for you and you should let it leave your space, QUICKLY!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a native of South Central Los Angeles and I love South Central. I would take my friend to where I grew up, where I went to school, and where all of the beautiful Black People reside!
We would then go to the Strand House for lunch because I love a restaurant with a view of the ocean and then take a walk on The Strand because why not?!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband!
Chad has always believed in me, even when others did and do not. We celebrate 21 years of marriage this year and never has he not thought I would succeed in anything that I do.
