We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennine Nwoko and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennine, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to start my own law firm and work for myself, because each time I was working at a law firm (I worked at three firms before starting my own), I would find myself thinking of different methods & processes of how to do things, the types of clients I wanted to represent and how to run a law firm. Unfortunately, most of them were not in alignment with the traditional, “old school” law firm model, and eventually, I realized that I needed to set up my own law firm and do business my way. As an example, most law firms don’t represent one-time clients with small budgets, and I felt like there was a huge need for that type of representation. Additionally, older firms don’t do marketing on social media, or utilize all the tools that are available these days. I’m glad I did take the route of starting my own firm, because I feel like as times change (with tech, social media, etc.) so must traditional industries.

In regards to Legal 4 Creatives, I saw a need for affordable legal representation for creatives, entrepreneurs and entertainers. Many of these need to talk to an attorney at times, or have access to contracts quickly, and that led me to starting the business. I want people to have easy access to lawyers and contract templates to ensure that they are not taken advantage of. We’re just getting started but I’m excited for what is to come!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Legal 4 Creatives was specifically created for creatives, by creatives. As a lawyer, I came across plenty of creatives, talent, entrepreneurs and individuals who had great ideas, talent and business plans, but did not know how to get started or what they needed exactly. I also saw many creatives been taken advantage of my larger companies – many upcoming artist & talent signed agreements without having legal representation and not understanding the consequences of agreeing to certain terms. These issues inspired me to start Legal 4 Creatives – we offer subscriptions where users can speak to lawyers and have their contracts reviewed, and also ready-made templates for entertainment industries. I’m excited about this platform because I think it will help a lot of people!

My journey to this point as a lawyer with my own firm and a legal startup was not easy, but all the years at law firms and working with several business taught me many lessons that I use now in my own businesses. Things I learned were: 1) You need to wear many hats when being a business-owner and be ready to work hard, and 2) You need to build a team & delegate tasks, but it can take a while to do that.

In the future, I hope to continue helping people both through my firm, CJN Law Group, and my company Legal 4 Creatives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take them on a hike to Runyon Canyon followed by chilling by the beach in Santa Monica. After that, shopping on Rodeo Drive or at vintage stores on Melrose. At night, I’d take them to Nobu in Malibu, and cocktails in Hollywood or DTLA.

I love LA because there’s something for everyone, depending on what you like.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mom! She’s always motivated me to go after my dreams and to believe I can accomplish anything I want. From a young age, she let me try all the hobbies I wanted to find my passions and strengths, and never limited me.
