Meet Scream Revolution | South Bay LA Teen Band

We had the good fortune of connecting with Scream Revolution and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scream, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
We met at a music school in Redondo Beach when we were just 9 and 10 years old. Back then we all lived in different cities in the South Bay of Los Angeles and went to different schools. But every Saturday we would meet up to play music together. Six years later, we still do. Just now for band practice at a rehearsal studio.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It’s pretty rare for teenaged bands to stick together for so long. We’ve been playing together since before we were even teenagers. We’ve all grown up together, quite literally. One of our pastimes during band practice is to measure our heights against each other, while Emma (previously the tallest) complains that Logan (previously the shortest) has passed her up.
Emma, Grey, and Logan started out playing together at School of Rock South Bay LA and Audrey joined the band soon after. We’ve had awesome guitarists come and go for a variety of reasons. Our longest running lead guitarist being Skyler Klett. When Skyler left, we reached out to Jared Manasse and Paige Blum who we knew from our local music community. They auditioned and both of them were a great fit. Jared plays with us now and Paige will join us later this year.
One of our early accomplishments back in 2019 was writing and recording our first song, “Babygirl,” about misogyny and rape culture. Emma, then 12, brought the lyrics to band practice and then the rest of us wrote the music. Our band manager’s friend, Craig Ochikubo, let us record in his home studio. It is not a song we play live anymore because, although still relevant, we’ve since outgrown the song. We are currently writing new music, and are getting ready to record it this summer. We can’t wait for you to hear it!
We are also proud of how we stayed together throughout Covid. Our last live show together was March 10, 2020. After lockdown we would meet online weekly with our former music instructor Sean Smith (Wet Sounds, LFZ) to hand out on Zoom and write music together. We would also hop onto virtual open mics and we did some virtual band interviews with Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls and South Bay TV. We had outdoor birthdays and outdoor holiday parties together. We sold Scream Revolutions masks to support the non-profit organization Brave Gowns. And Emma raised money to donate instruments for kids and teens who could use them through her project OneKid1Guitar. As soon as it was safe to do so, we started band practice outside in our backyards…thanks to our awesome and understanding neighbors!
We have incredible parents who support everything we do in every way: from music lessons, to rehearsal space, to driving us to practice and gigs (none of us are old enough to drive on our own, yet), to showing up for our shows and buying us instruments. Emma’s mom is our band manager. She handles a lot of things for us. Because of the opportunities we’ve been provided, we’ve had some great experiences and have gotten to play some really cool stages in Los Angeles. We’re really grateful for all of it. We’re still really young and are always working to be better at what we do. We surround ourselves with talented and experienced musicians. Learning from other bands, practice, and performing live are the ways you get better and grow.
Most recently we hosted three Sunday shows at The End in Torrance. We played with 18 incredibly talented bands over three weekends. The Los Angeles – South Bay – Orange County music scene is full of talented teenage and young adult bands. We’ve stayed connected through Instagram and by hanging out together at the shows we see and play. There is nothing better than getting a bunch of bands together in one room and playing together. It’s the best is when everyone is up on their feet rocking out to each other’s music.
We currently have a residency at The End where we get to bring different bands together to play with us, once a month on Sundays.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’re so lucky to live in Los Angeles. Depending what our friend is into…they could go surfing with Audrey, play soccer with Jared and Paige, tour our local TV studio with Logan where he works, check out a performing arts high school with Grey, relax while reading and drawing with Emma…or they could see some live music with any of us! Who they went to see play would depend on which one of us they went out with. We all have slightly different musical tastes.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d like to dedicate our shoutout to our parents, of course. But also to music schools, organizations, and camps that bring kids together with music. Some of our favorites are School of Rock South Bay LA, South Bay Music Connection, Downbeat 720, and Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles.
