We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Mensink and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work-life balance has changed drastically over the years. I’m a first-generation, Mexican – American and my father came into the states from Mexico when he was a child. He worked non-stop and I never really saw him growing up and when I did he was just worn out all the time. (He’s a workaholic haha) but I thought that’s what life’s all about, working to make a living. So, I worked multiple jobs, taking each new opportunity that came up. I was exhausted, but didn’t really notice it until 2020 came along and I lost my job. I ended up moving to the countryside on a 5 acre ranch and that’s what helped me slow down. During my year off I spent most of my time outdoors, gardening, tending to the chickens, walking, sitting on my porch, the simple things. I got a new opportunity to work at a company in 2021. I work remotely with my own hours. So although I have my fathers work drive, I know now when to leave myself space for opportunities to enjoy life and I’m so thankful to have realized it now then later in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an influencer coordinator for an awesome company, I scout TikTok/IG for micro-influencers and connect them with their favorite brands. Also, I create content and work with brands for my own IG account as a micro-influencer. I love creating content, I get to be creative and have fun, and I don’t get stuck in a weird funk. I get so excited to partner with new brands that are changing the world. I didn’t get a degree in any of this and dropped out of college my first semester, but it took a long time and a lot of tears to figure out what I wanted to pursue in my life. I’m happy to have found two things that truly make me happy and that I’m passionate about.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends where visiting the area, The first place I would take them would be on a wine tour. I live out here in the country side and its wine country so we have a ton of cool spots. For dinner, There’s this really good restaurant called Goat & Vine in Old Town their pizza and honestly everything has been absolutely delicious and the atmosphere is so lively. The next morning hit up my favorite local coffee shop called The Press Espresso. My favorite seasonal drink there is called the Banana foster Latte. Then we can go on a hike at this spot called Dripping Springs Campground. For the evening, there’s this place just down the Highway called Garage 79 they have the occasional classic cars that pull up and local draft beer, music, and food from local caters. I’d finish the week with a trip to the best pie place in Southern California called Julian Pie Company, their pies are incredible and I used to not be huge pie person until I’ve tried theirs. Some of the best times have been at these locations, and a lot these spots are small businesses which I love to support!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank my father for all his hard work and continuous support for his children throughout our life, he’s molded me into the person I am today. He’s been so proud of us, never giving up on his family and also my husband who has supported and loved me through some of the hardest patches in life.
