We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenzy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brenzy, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in Virginia in a really tight knit family – the youngest of 3 with two older brothers. I’ve been surrounded by music for my entire life. From the time I was a toddler, my parents were in bands together and my oldest brother was in a couple of bands too. Practices and jam sessions were always held in our basement, and I would just sit on the floor to watch and listen. I eventually got my way onto a microphone and sang some “oohs” and “ahhs” for them, and then when I was 8, I sang on stage by myself for the first time at a church camp. I fell in love with it immediately. I began writing around 11 years old, and I was performing a few times a week by the time I was 14. I got into the industry when I was 15, and moved to Los Angeles that year. It was a rollercoaster trying to navigate my teen years while also trying to find myself as an artist, but I’m really proud of how strong I’ve stayed and the young woman that I’ve grown into.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I make R&B/Pop music! More importantly, I make music that feels true to who I am. I don’t aim to make music that’s trendy or “what’s working”, because I’m not good at hiding who I am. I’m most proud of my songs “brunch” and “Seven Days”. These songs pushed me creatively and helped me realize that I’m not boxed into one genre or sound, so I just got to be free while writing them. I think my authenticity sets me apart from others. I never want to come across as a product, but as an artist and human being. Working as an artist from such a young age has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. From the time I was 15 or 16, a lot of people tried to turn me into something that I’m not. I was put into a box when it came to how I looked, the music I made, how I dressed, etc. I stayed true to myself through those years, and eventually got to show the world who I really am by the time I was 19, almost 20. I’m 22 now and really proud of the woman I’m becoming.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would be going all over the place. I would definitely take them to Malibu – it’s so beautiful there. I’d also take them to Six Flags, as obvious or basic as it may sound. The rollercoasters and rides there are crazy! All of the essential Los Angeles tourist attractions – Santa Monica Pier, Hollywood, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jesse Barrera. Jesse is one of the most fun-loving and talented people I’ve ever met/worked with. He’s helped me grow as an artist since I was 19 and always provided guidance whenever I needed it. He’s co-written, produced, engineered, and mixed almost every one of my songs, and he’ll never know how grateful I am to him for who he is as a human being and artist.
