We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathalia Segoviano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathalia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It actually didn’t start out as a business idea. It started as a private instagram account where I invited friends and family to follow my budgeting story. I realized I was sharing a lot about my budgeting journey on my personal account and so I decided to start a separate account. At first it was just friends and family. Then I had friends asking me to host workshops and that is when the business started. I first hosted a budgeting and wine event in February of 2020 with some friends in my home. Then I started having virtual workshops. My first workshops were budgeting workshops focused on saving and debt payoffs. Slowly but surely I started seeing that there was a real need for this education in my community so I decided to pursue the business idea further. During the pandemic I hosted workshops and empowerment circles. My empowerment circles usually had a topic related to finances where we could gather and ask questions in a safe space. I wanted to normalize the money conversations that many people aren’t used to having in their private lives.

What should our readers know about your business?

Currently I provide one on one money coaching where I give 3-6 months of support to clients who want to get their financial life in order. I do everything from budgeting, savings, investing and credit education. My one on one clients usually need the most support in finding a budgeting method that works for them. I love teaching them various savings methods and about investing. I am passionate about educating women and people of color. I speak Spanish and I pride myself on providing bilingual financial education.

I have pre recorded workshops people have lifetime access to which teach them the building blocks of financial education and about 529 accounts for those of us with kids.

My business partner Kelly from KeLindaEres and I joined forces and created a financial education program. We have over 14 modules separated into two tracks: Financial Foundations and Unlocking your Potential. The two tracks cover topics such as budgeting, saving, debt pay off, healing relationships with money, retirement planning, credit and investing. Our program is called the 90 Day Money Empowerment program, we meet with our participants once a month, and we provide both one on one and group coaching within the program. We have done three rounds of the program so far and love watching our clients grow. Watching women, especially women of color build wealth and change the trajectory of their financial lives is amazing.

It has not been easy getting the business where it is today. I work full time, I am the primary bread winner in my family and I am a mom. So it’s a lot to juggle.

Running a business on top of all of that has been very stressful at times. I have had to overcome internal struggles such as imposter syndrome. I have dealt with burn out and have had to work on myself a lot to get the business to where it is today. I overcame the challenges by learning more about entrepreneurship from other coaches. I listen to Cat Del Carmen’s Latinas Booked Out podcast for motivation and mindset shifts. I had to become open to the ideas of doing less and asking for help. I hired a virtual assistant which was one of the best decisions I made. That took a lot off my plate. Since starting this business I have had to do a lot of internal work because I am a recovering workaholic. This year I have really learned to rest and say no. I am primarily focused on coaching via our program and I take on a handful of clients a year because I want to make sure I can give them as much support as I can, while not burning myself out. I am lucky to love both of my jobs so not working actually takes a lot of work for me.

Some lessons I have learned along the way are that needing help and advice do not mean you are failing. I have learned what my personal values are and how to make sure that I am prioritizing them so that the business stays fun and doesn’t become overwhelming. I have learned that it’s ok to charge your worth because you are putting in the time and hard work so you need to be compensated well. That was one of my biggest obstacles, learning how to charge for my services. I have never run a business and had no idea what I was doing. I really leaned on more experienced coaches to help me change my scarcity mindset around this.

I want the world to know that building wealth is possible and that changing the trajectory of your financial situation is possible. When I started this journey I was over $18,000 in credit card debt, I had student loan debt and I was the breadwinner in my family. When my daughter was born my husband and I decided it was best for my husband to stay home with her because childcare is too expensive. To this day my husband is a stay at home father. At first it was really difficult because we had a lot of debt. I worked 6 days a week every other week so I could get paid over time. Once I found financial education and built a budget everything changed for us. On one income less than 100k I was able to get myself out of credit card debt. I never stopped investing in my retirement accounts and we finally had savings. I want the world to know that building wealth is possible. No matter where you are in your financial journey it’s possible to change our mindset and change our behavior to get to a better place. I want to show women and mothers that we are capable of achieving financial freedom for ourselves and generational wealth for our children.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am outdoorsy person so I would take my friends on lots of outdoor outings like hiking at Griffith Park or the Los Angeles Forest. A walk around the flower gardens at the California Science Center and the Huntington Library. The beach at Mailbu and the Getty Museum. Some of my favorite places to eat are the restaurant Home on Hillhurst, Thai Ocha on Vermont, the Perch in downtown has great food and views. Masa of Echo Park is also essential! There is so much do in Los Angeles that’s why I love living here.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Two of the biggest influences in my journey have been Farnosh Torabi and her So Money Podcast and @delyannethemoneycoach. I had been listening to So Money since 2019. Thanks for the financial education Farnoosh provides I opened my daughters 529 account and found a budgeting method that worked for me. Then in March of 2020 I took Delyanne’s slay the stock market course and it lit my fire into all things finance. This is what started my passion for personal finance education.
